한국 문학, 세계 문학과 만나다 (2)

21세기 들어 한국 대중문화는 전 세계를 휩쓸었다. K-팝, K-드라마, K-영화가 연이어 세계 시장에서 성공을 거두면서 ‘한류’라는 이름이 붙었다. 그런데 이 거대한 흐름은 문학에도 파급 효과를 가져왔다. 해외 독자들이 BTS의 노래와 《오징어 게임》, 《기생충》을 통해 한국 사회와 정서에 호기심을 갖게 되면서, 자연스럽게 한국 문학에도 눈길을 돌리기 시작한 것이다.

실제로 해외 출판사들은 최근 몇 년간 한국 문학을 “새롭고 신선하다”는 이유로 적극적으로 소개하고 있다. 과거에는 일본이나 중국 문학이 아시아 문학의 대표로 자리했지만, 이제는 한국 문학이 그 자리를 빠르게 채워가고 있다. 2022년 정보라의 《저주토끼》가 부커상 인터내셔널 최종 후보에 오르고, 2023년 천명관의 《고래》, 2024년 황석영의 《철도원 삼대》가 잇따라 후보에 오르면서 한국 문학은 국제 문학상 무대에서 ‘연속성 있는 존재감’을 드러냈다.

한류와 문학의 만남은 단순한 ‘문화적 덤’이 아니다. 오히려 문학은 한류의 지속성을 담보할 수 있는 중요한 축이다. 대중문화가 빠른 소비와 유행의 속성을 지닌다면, 문학은 깊이와 사유를 통해 한국 문화의 뿌리를 세계에 알린다. 이창동 감독과 도종환 시인 역시 “한국 문학의 세계화가 한류의 지속적 발전의 관건”이라고 강조한 바 있다.

또한 최근에는 ‘힐링 소설’이나 ‘북카페 소설’ 같은 장르가 일본과 동남아시아에서 큰 인기를 끌고 있다. 황보름의 《어서 오세요, 휴남동 서점입니다》는 일본 서점대상 번역소설 부문 1위를 차지하며, 한국 문학이 단순히 무겁고 난해한 주제만 다루는 것이 아니라, 일상의 따뜻한 감성을 전하는 힘도 있다는 사실을 보여주었다.

한류가 세계인의 감각을 열어젖혔다면, 문학은 그 감각을 깊이 있게 채워 넣는다. 한국 문학은 이제 더 이상 ‘한류의 그림자’가 아니라, 한류의 또 다른 중심축으로 자리 잡아가고 있다.

The Synergy Between Hallyu and Literature

In the 21st century, Korean popular culture has taken the world by storm. With the global success of K-pop, K-dramas, and Korean films, the term Hallyu—the Korean Wave—was born. Yet this massive cultural movement has also had a profound ripple effect on literature. As international audiences became curious about Korean society and emotions through BTS’s music, Squid Game, and Parasite, their attention naturally began to turn toward Korean literature.

In recent years, foreign publishers have been actively introducing Korean works to global readers, describing them as “fresh and original.” Whereas Japanese and Chinese literature once represented Asian voices in the world’s literary scene, Korean literature is now rapidly taking that place. Bora Chung’s Cursed Bunny was shortlisted for the 2022 Booker International Prize, followed by Cheon Myeong-kwan’s Whale in 2023 and Hwang Sok-yong’s Mater 2-10 in 2024—establishing a consistent presence of Korean authors on the international awards stage.

The meeting of Hallyu and literature is not merely a “cultural bonus.” Rather, literature serves as a crucial pillar that ensures the sustainability of Hallyu. Popular culture tends to move quickly, driven by consumption and trends, while literature conveys the depth and contemplation that reveal the true roots of Korean culture. As director Lee Chang-dong and poet Do Jong-hwan have emphasized, “The globalization of Korean literature is key to the continued growth of Hallyu.”

Recently, genres such as “healing novels” and “bookstore fiction” have gained remarkable popularity in Japan and Southeast Asia. Hwang Bo-reum’s Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop topped the translated fiction category of Japan’s Bookstore Awards, proving that Korean literature does not only deal with heavy or difficult themes but also possesses the warmth and emotional depth of everyday life.

If Hallyu has opened the world’s senses, then literature fills those senses with depth and meaning. Korean literature is no longer the “shadow” of Hallyu—it is emerging as one of its central pillars.
