문학평론가들은 “한국 문학의 세계화는 번역의 질과 양에 달려 있다”고 입을 모은다. 실제로 일본의 무라카미 하루키가 세계적 작가로 자리매김한 배경에는 번역 친화적인 문체와 헌신적인 번역가들의 노력이 있었다는 사실은 잘 알려져 있다. 한국 문학 역시 번역가와의 긴밀한 협업, 그리고 국가적 차원의 번역 지원이 뒷받침되어야 한다.

Translation: The First Gateway to the World

The full-scale emergence of Korean literature onto the global literary stage is a relatively recent phenomenon—barely a decade old. In 2016, when The Vegetarian by Han Kang won the Man Booker International Prize, the world literary community rediscovered the immense potential of Korean fiction. Yet, behind that moment of glory stood the dedication of translator Deborah Smith. Having studied Korean for only a few years, she rendered the novel into English with such sensitivity that the work’s chilling, minimalist tone resonated vividly with readers around the world.

Translation is far more than the act of changing words from one language to another. It is a creative endeavor that must convey cultural contexts, emotional nuances, and the rhythm of the original prose. When Shin Kyung-sook’s Please Look After Mom was translated and published in 37 countries, becoming an international bestseller, it was the power of translation that made a deeply Korean family story universally relatable through the figure of “Mother.”

In recent years, translations have expanded beyond English, French, and German to include Romanian, Bosnian, Ukrainian, and many other languages. This shows that Korean literature is no longer confined to specific cultural regions but is finding readers across the globe. Nevertheless, challenges remain in both the quality and diversity of translations. Even when foreign publishers show interest in Korean works, opportunities can be lost if there are not enough skilled translators to meet the demand.

Literary critics often remark that “the globalization of Korean literature depends on the quality and quantity of its translations.” Indeed, it is well known that the global success of Japan’s Haruki Murakami owes much to his translation-friendly style and the devoted efforts of his translators. Similarly, the international rise of Korean literature requires close collaboration between authors and translators, supported by systematic national initiatives for translation.

Translation is not merely a technical process—it is a dialogue with the world. The first gateway through which Korean literature must pass to meet world literature lies in how it crosses the threshold of translation.
