  • [Sisa K Editorial] Knowing the Law Does Not Mean Possessing Justice — A New Dawn Will Come to Korea

Do Not Wound the People in the Name of Law

The Korean people are watching today’s political landscape with heavy hearts and profound dismay. Former judges and prosecutors now occupy powerful political positions, but citizens are looking beyond their impressive résumés. They are asking how these individuals have lived—and whether they have remained faithful to their conscience.

Recent reports and controversies surrounding the nominee for Minister of Justice have left many citizens with a deep sense of loss. Every allegation must be rigorously verified, and the nominee’s explanations must also be examined fairly. Yet anyone seeking to lead the nation’s justice system must naturally be held to a far higher standard of integrity and accountability.

This public frustration is more than ordinary political disappointment. Citizens are asking whether those who know the law best have treated it not as a shield for justice, but as a tool for ambition and power.

Writing countless judgments does not automatically make someone just. Conducting numerous investigations does not necessarily make someone fair. And extensive legal knowledge certainly does not guarantee a deeper conscience.

The law can be learned through examinations and professional experience, but justice is demonstrated through the way one lives. How a person treats the vulnerable, whether they uphold principle before power, and whether they have the courage to admit wrongdoing—these are the true measures of qualification.

No Power Stands Above the People’s Common Sense

The Minister of Justice is not the legal representative of a particular administration or political faction. The office exists to uphold constitutional values, protect fundamental rights, and ensure that the law applies fairly to everyone.

The confirmation process must not be reduced to partisan confrontation. The nominee should be judged neither by the excuse “this person is on our side” nor by automatic rejection because they belong to the opposing camp. Facts, principles, and the ethical standards required of public officials must remain the only criteria.

If allegations are proven true, clear accountability must follow. If they are false, the public must be persuaded through objective evidence and transparent explanation. The higher the office one seeks, the more scrutiny one must endure—and the greater the humility one must show before the people.

The public cannot accept anyone who enjoys privilege while resisting scrutiny, or demands authority while avoiding responsibility. No power stands above the people’s common sense, and no judgment is more formidable than the watchful eyes of the people.

However Deep the Darkness, Dawn Will Come

However bleak today’s political reality may appear, we must not surrender to despair. It may seem that falsehood speaks louder than truth, power outruns common sense, and those without shame raise their voices most confidently.

But a long night does not erase the morning. Dark clouds may cover the sky, but they cannot stop the sun from rising. Truth may be concealed for a time, but it cannot remain buried forever.

Justice sometimes appears slow and lonely, while power and falsehood seem swift and strong. Yet justice possesses a resilience that deception can never have. Citizens remember the truth, question injustice, and remain faithful to conscience in their daily lives.

Even when politics disappoints the people, the people must not abandon justice. Even when those in power forget shame, citizens must not lower their moral standards. If those entrusted with the law dishonor it, the public must defend its true spirit with even greater resolve.

A just society is not a gift delivered by a single hero. It is a shared dawn created by citizens who remember, question, monitor power, and vote.

Korea’s New Dawn Will Surely Come

Today, we make this solemn demand of those entrusted with the law:

Do not wield the law as a sword of power.

Do not use justice as a ladder for personal advancement.

Do not conceal the people’s wounds beneath political rhetoric.

If wrongdoing occurred, admit it. If responsibility is owed, accept it.

Darkness may linger, but it cannot prevent the morning. Power may delay justice, but it cannot imprison it forever. The day will come when conscience awakens and the people’s common sense overcomes the arrogance of power.

On that day, we will understand:

Truth had not disappeared; it had only been hidden.

Justice was not weak; it was waiting for its moment.

And the conscience of the people was ultimately stronger than any power.

Dawn asks no one’s permission to arrive.

As long as the people remain awake, a new dawn will surely come to Korea.
