트럼프 미국 대통령과 이재명 한국 대통령의 첫 정상회담이 끝났다. 양국 정상은 경제·안보 현안을 폭넓게 논의하며 동맹의 중요성을 재확인했지만, 회담이 남긴 인상은 기대와 우려가 뒤섞여 있다.

The first summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has concluded. The two leaders reaffirmed the importance of the alliance while discussing a wide range of economic and security issues, but the overall impression left by the talks is a mix of anticipation and concern.

무엇보다 이번 회담은 한미동맹의 미래 방향을 가늠하는 중요한 시험대였다. 트럼프 대통령은 경제협력 강화와 국방비 분담 문제를 전면에 내세웠고, 이재명 대통령은 한반도 평화 구상과 균형 외교를 강조했다. 표면적으로는 공동성명에서 협력 의지가 확인됐으나, 각자의 국내 정치적 계산이 묻어 있었다는 점에서 실질적 합의의 무게감은 다소 가벼웠다.

Above all, this summit served as an important test of the future direction of the U.S.–ROK alliance. President Trump placed emphasis on strengthening economic cooperation and burden-sharing in defense costs, while President Lee highlighted his vision for peace on the Korean Peninsula and balanced diplomacy. Although the joint statement confirmed a will to cooperate, the weight of substantive agreement was somewhat light, as domestic political calculations on both sides were evident.

미국 언론과 의회의 반응도 이를 잘 보여준다. 언론은 한미 동맹의 연속성을 강조하면서도 트럼프 대통령의 ‘거래적 접근’이 다시 등장했다고 지적했고, 의회에서는 초당적으로 북한 억지력 강화 필요성을 언급하면서도 무역·안보 비용 분담 문제에선 의견이 갈렸다.

The responses from U.S. media and Congress reflect this dynamic. While the press emphasized the continuity of the alliance, it also noted the reemergence of President Trump’s “transactional approach.” In Congress, there was bipartisan agreement on the need to strengthen deterrence against North Korea, but divisions emerged over trade and cost-sharing in security matters.

이번 회담은 협력의 문을 닫지 않았다는 점에서 의미가 있지만, 동시에 불확실성을 키웠다. 동맹을 안보와 경제 모두에서 ‘윈윈’으로 이끌어야 하는 과제가 여전히 남아 있다. 특히 한국 정부는 미국의 요구를 수용하는 데 급급하기보다, 국익을 바탕으로 한 주도적 비전을 제시해야 한다.

This summit is meaningful in that it did not close the door to cooperation, yet it also heightened uncertainty. The task of steering the alliance toward a true “win-win” in both security and economic spheres remains. In particular, the South Korean government must focus less on passively accepting U.S. demands and more on presenting a proactive vision grounded in national interest.

한미 정상회담은 종착점이 아니라 출발점이다. 긴밀한 협력 속에서도 독자적 전략을 마련해야 한국이 흔들리지 않는 동맹의 축으로 설 수 있다. 이번 회담이 그 출발선이 되기를 기대한다.

The U.S.–ROK summit is not a destination but a starting point. Even within close cooperation, South Korea must craft an independent strategy if it is to stand as a steadfast pillar of the alliance. We hope this summit marks that starting line.
