- [EXCLUSIVE] Democratic Party's Judiciary Chair Lee Choon-suk Faces Widening Allegations of Proxy Stock Trading During Assembly Sessions

Lee Choon-suk, Chair of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee of South Korea’s Democratic Party, is facing growing allegations of engaging in proxy stock trading under his aide’s name during official National Assembly proceedings.
The controversy erupted after photos surfaced on August 4, 2025, showing Lee using his smartphone during a plenary session to purchase high-value stocks, including Naver, Kakao Pay, and LG CNS. The account name displayed on the trading screen was not his own but registered under an aide identified only as “Cha ○○.” The transaction volume reportedly exceeded 100 million KRW (approx. $75,000).
Notably, a similar incident occurred during a parliamentary audit in October 2024, when Lee was captured by media cameras looking at a stock trading app under the same aide’s name. Although it did not draw much attention at the time, the current revelation has reignited suspicions.
Lee has claimed he mistakenly used his aide’s phone, denying any wrongdoing. However, critics argue the explanation is insufficient and that the situation may constitute violations of the Real Name Financial Transactions Act and the Public Officials’ Ethics Act.
Democratic Party leader Jung Cheong-rae has ordered an immediate internal investigation, while the opposition People Power Party is demanding Lee’s resignation and plans to file criminal charges.
Political analysts point out that engaging in personal stock trading during legislative duties represents a serious breach of public ethics, regardless of legality. There are growing calls for a thorough investigation and accountability.
