Gangwon State University successfully hosted a meaningful forum discussing future strategies centered on the ocean.
Gangwon State University (President Choi Jong-gyun) announced that it successfully held the 4th “Jumunjin Dokkaebi Forum: Voices of Distinguished Figures of Our Time” on March 25 at the university’s main building seminar room.
Approximately 50 participants, including students and local residents, attended the event, demonstrating strong interest throughout the forum.
The “Jumunjin Dokkaebi Forum” is a public lecture program that invites experts from various fields to share current issues and future visions, serving as a representative knowledge-sharing platform for both students and the local community.
At the 4th forum, Ambassador Kim Jin-hyung, former ambassador to Fiji and five South Pacific nations, delivered a keynote lecture under the theme “Our Future Blue Economy: The Era of the East Sea.”
In his lecture, Ambassador Kim emphasized the importance of the “Blue Economy,” a sustainable economic model based on oceans, which cover 71% of the Earth’s surface.
He defined the Blue Economy as a key 21st-century strategy that simultaneously pursues marine ecosystem preservation and economic growth, projecting a global market worth $3 trillion and 40 million jobs by 2030.
He particularly highlighted the strategic value of Gangwon’s East Coast, describing the East Sea as a “mini-ocean” and an ideal site for deep-sea research.
He identified key regional assets, including future energy resources such as deep-sea water and gas hydrates, rich fishing grounds where cold and warm currents meet, and the region’s potential as a logistics hub due to the opening of Arctic shipping routes.
Ambassador Kim stressed that “there is no future where there is no awareness,” calling for a shift in perspective—viewing the ocean not as a resource to consume but as a partner for coexistence.
He further emphasized the need for collaboration among government, businesses, research institutions, and local communities to build specialized marine strategies incorporating AI technologies, asserting that “Korea’s future growth engine will begin in Gangwon and the East Sea.”
The lecture holds significance in that it presented a concrete vision for Gangwon State’s marine economy amid global challenges such as climate change and food security.
President Choi Jong-gyun stated, “This forum was a meaningful opportunity to share the future potential of the East Sea in the era of the Blue Economy,” adding that “we will continue to expand platforms where the university and the local community can communicate and prepare for the future together.”
Meanwhile, the “Jumunjin Dokkaebi Forum” remains an open lecture series accessible to all residents and is steadily establishing itself as a leading knowledge-sharing platform in the region.
