워싱턴 CSIS에서 발표된 이재명 대통령의 연설은 한국 외교의 새로운 방향성을 보여주었다. 민주주의 회복력 강조, ‘안미경중(安美經中)’ 기조와의 결별 선언, 국익 중심 실용 외교 등은 고무적이다. 그러나 핵심은 말이 아니라 실천이다.

President Lee’s speech at CSIS showcased a new direction for South Korean diplomacy. His emphasis on democratic resilience, break from the “Security with the U.S., Economy with China” stance, and call for pragmatic, national interest–oriented diplomacy are encouraging. Yet the key lies in action, not words.

이 대통령은 한미동맹의 현대화를 강조하며, 군사 협력을 넘어 경제·기술·문화·글로벌 현안으로 확장해야 한다고 밝혔다. 이는 시대적 요구에 부합하는 시도지만, 구체적 실행 계획과 성과 지표가 제시되지 않는다면 국민적 신뢰를 확보하기 어렵다.
President Lee stressed the modernization of the Korea-U.S. alliance, expanding it beyond military cooperation into economy, technology, culture, and global issues. This aligns with contemporary demands, but without concrete implementation plans and performance indicators, it will be difficult to earn public trust.

한반도 비핵화 의지와 국제사회 협력 강화 의지도 재확인했다. 다만 북한의 군사적 도발과 핵 능력 고도화 속에서 이를 현실화할 구체적 방안이 함께 제시되어야 한다. 원칙과 현실의 균형이 관건이다.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to denuclearization and international cooperation. However, amid North Korea’s military provocations and nuclear advancements, concrete measures to achieve this goal are necessary. The challenge lies in balancing principle with reality.

한·미·일 3국 협력 강조는 동북아 안정과 글로벌 과제 대응 측면에서 의미가 있다. 하지만 역사 문제와 국내 여론을 고려할 때, 단순한 필요성 제시는 설득력이 떨어진다. 국익 보호와 국민 정서의 조화가 필수적이다.
His emphasis on Korea-U.S.-Japan trilateral cooperation is significant for Northeast Asian stability and global challenges. Yet, given historical issues and domestic sentiment, simply stating its necessity lacks persuasiveness. Aligning national interest with public sentiment is essential.

결론적으로 이번 연설은 한국 외교의 방향성을 제시했다는 점에서 의미가 있다. 그러나 진정한 성과는 실행력과 구체적 전략에서 나온다. 국익 중심 외교는 선언만으로 완성되지 않으며, 정책으로 뒷받침될 때 국민과 국제사회 모두의 신뢰를 얻을 수 있다.
In conclusion, the speech was meaningful in presenting the direction of Korean diplomacy. Yet real results will come from execution and concrete strategy. National interest–driven diplomacy cannot be realized through declarations alone; only when supported by policy can it earn the trust of both the public and the international community.
