다가오는 25일 한미 정상회담을 앞두고, 우리는 분명히 짚어야 할 근본적인 질문이 있다. 한국의 대미 정책은 어디서 출발해야 하는가? 나는 그 출발점이 분명하다고 본다. 그것은 바로 미국에 대한 감사(Gratitude toward the United States)다.

As the Korea-U.S. summit on the 25th approaches, we must ask a fundamental question: Where should Korea’s policy toward the United States begin? To me, the starting point is clear: gratitude toward the United States.

한국 현대사의 어느 장면을 보아도, 미국의 존재를 빼고는 설명할 수 없다. 한국전쟁에서 미국은 젊은 피를 흘려 이 땅을 지켰다. 전후 재건과 산업화 과정에서 미국의 지원은 우리의 성장 기반이었다. 냉전기의 핵심 동맹으로서 미국은 안보의 우산을 제공했고, 오늘날에도 미군의 존재가 우리의 자유를 보장한다.
In every chapter of Korea’s modern history, America’s presence has been indispensable. In the Korean War, America shed its young blood to defend this land. In the postwar reconstruction and industrialization process, U.S. aid laid the foundation for our growth. As a core ally during the Cold War, America provided a security umbrella, and even today, the presence of U.S. forces guarantees our freedom.

그러나 최근의 논의에서는 이 감사의 출발점이 자꾸 희미해지고 있다. 일부는 동맹을 권리처럼 당연시하고, 심지어 미국을 비판하는 데만 열을 올린다. 하지만 현실은 정반대다. 미국은 선택 가능한 동맹이 아니라, 한국이 없어서는 안 될 절대적 동반자다.
Yet in recent debates, this starting point of gratitude is fading. Some treat the alliance as an entitlement, while others focus on criticizing America. But reality says otherwise. America is not a negotiable ally; it is Korea’s indispensable partner.

다가오는 정상회담에서 트럼프 대통령과 미국 시민들이 듣고 싶어 하는 것은 단순하다. “한국은 미국을 필요로 하고, 한국은 미국에 감사한다”는 분명한 메시지다. 이것이 전제되지 않는다면, 방위비 분담, 통상 갈등, 인도태평양 전략 같은 산적한 현안은 풀릴 리 없다.
What President Trump and the American people want to hear at the upcoming summit is simple: a clear message that “Korea needs America, and Korea is grateful to America.” Without this premise, thorny issues such as defense cost-sharing, trade disputes, and the Indo-Pacific strategy will never be resolved.

냉혹하게 말하자. 외교에서 감사는 단순한 도덕적 미사여구가 아니다. 그것은 힘의 현실을 인정하는 출발점이다. 우리가 감사의 태도를 분명히 할 때, 미국은 신뢰를 느끼고 협력의 문을 연다. 반대로 이를 외면하면, 미국은 냉정하게 계산기를 두드릴 뿐이다.
Let me be blunt. In diplomacy, gratitude is not mere moral rhetoric. It is the starting point of acknowledging the reality of power. When we make our gratitude explicit, America feels trust and opens the door to cooperation. If we ignore it, America will simply pull out its calculator.

일각에서는 “왜 우리가 일방적으로 감사해야 하느냐”는 반론을 제기할 수 있다. 그러나 이 질문 자체가 오만이다. 한국은 안보, 경제, 국제정치에서 미국의 절대적 영향력 아래 있다. 감사는 굴종이 아니라, 전략적 현실주의다.
Some may ask, “Why should we be the ones to express gratitude unilaterally?” But this very question reeks of arrogance. Korea exists under America’s overwhelming influence in security, economics, and geopolitics. Gratitude is not submission; it is strategic realism.

한미 정상회담은 단순한 이벤트가 아니다. 그것은 한국의 생존 전략을 시험하는 무대다. 우리의 목소리는 미국의 마음을 움직일 만큼 분명해야 한다. 감사 위에 현실을 쌓고, 그 현실 위에 협력을 설계할 때, 한국은 진정한 동맹으로 인정받는다.
The Korea-U.S. summit is not a mere event. It is a stage where Korea’s survival strategy is tested. Our voice must be clear enough to move America’s heart. When we build reality upon gratitude, and cooperation upon that reality, Korea will be recognized as a true ally.
