- “It’s About Capability, Not Just Numbers”

“It’s About Capability, Not Just Numbers” – USFK Commander Signals Change
“What matters isn’t how many troops we have, but what we can do.”
General Xavier Brunson, Commander of US Forces Korea, said this on Aug. 8 at Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek. He stressed that USFK must focus on advanced weapons and flexible force deployment rather than simply maintaining troop numbers.
For example, he noted that one F-35 fighter jet can match the capability of two older jets, suggesting that even with fewer personnel, combat readiness can be maintained. He also highlighted the need for strategic flexibility to deploy forces beyond the Korean Peninsula when necessary.
On the transfer of wartime operational control (OPCON), Brunson warned, “Shortcuts are risky”, insisting that conditions must be met first.
His remarks hint at a future shift toward troop restructuring, modernization, and capability-centered operations.
