72주년 정전협정 기념식, 美-韓 메시지 온도차 뚜렷

2025년 7월 27일, 한국전쟁 정전협정 체결 72주년을 맞아 열린 기념식에서 한·미 인사들의 발언이 뚜렷한 차이를 보였다.
On July 27, 2025, at the ceremony marking the 72nd anniversary of the Korean War Armistice Agreement, the remarks from South Korean and U.S. officials showed a clear divergence.

 

존 틸러슨 전 주한미군사령관 / Former USFK Commander John Tillerson

틸러슨 전 사령관은 기념사에서 한미동맹의 전략적 진화 필요성을 강조했다. 그는 “한반도를 넘어 대만 해협 등 역내 안보환경 변화에 대응하기 위해 한미일 3국의 군사협력 강화가 중요하다”고 말했다.
Former Commander Tillerson stressed the need for the U.S.–ROK alliance to evolve strategically. He stated, “Beyond the Korean Peninsula, it is vital to strengthen trilateral security cooperation among South Korea, the U.S., and Japan to address regional security challenges, including those in the Taiwan Strait.”

 

또한, 최근 한국 내에서 논란이 된 미국의 핵우산 신뢰성과 한국의 자체 핵무장론에 대해서는 “민감한 사안은 언론을 통한 공개 논쟁이 아니라 동맹 내부의 전략적 대화 속에서 다뤄야 한다”고 지적했다.
Regarding the ongoing debate in South Korea over the credibility of the U.S. nuclear umbrella and the idea of indigenous nuclear armament, he warned that “such sensitive matters should not be debated publicly but discussed within the framework of strategic dialogues among allies.”

콜린스 장관은 X(구 트위터)에 “72년 전 오늘, 정전협정은 한국전쟁의 적대 행위를 멈췄다. 오늘 아침, 나는 참전용사들과 함께했다”라는 메시지를 남겼다.
Secretary Doug Collins posted on X (formerly Twitter), “72 years ago today, the Korean Armistice Agreement ended the hostilities of the Korean War. This morning, I stood alongside veterans.”

 

그는 기념식에서도 한미동맹의 희생과 자유의 가치를 재확인하며, 한국전 참전용사들에게 깊은 경의를 표했다.
At the ceremony, he reaffirmed the sacrifices and the values of freedom upheld by the U.S.–ROK alliance, paying deep respect to the Korean War veterans.

 

권오을 한국 보훈장관 / South Korean Veterans Affairs Minister Kwon O-eul

반면, 권오을 장관은 이날 기념사에서 북한에 대해 단 한마디도 언급하지 않았다.
In contrast, Minister Kwon O-eul did not mention North Korea at all in his remarks.

그는 “평화와 번영을 지키기 위해 헌신한 모든 분들께 감사드린다”며 참전용사의 헌신과 희생을 기리는 데 발언을 집중했으나, 북한의 위협이나 현재의 안보 상황에 대한 메시지는 없었다.

He focused his speech on “expressing gratitude to all who dedicated themselves to preserving peace and prosperity,” but avoided any reference to North Korea’s threats or the current security situation.

 

전문가들은 “미국 인사들이 동맹의 미래 전략과 북한 위협을 명확히 언급한 것과 달리, 한국 측에서 북한을 언급하지 않은 것은 최근의 복잡한 남북관계 및 정치적 고려가 반영된 것”이라고 분석했다.
Experts noted that “while the U.S. officials explicitly addressed the future of the alliance and the North Korean threat, the absence of such references from the South Korean side reflects the complex dynamics of inter-Korean relations and domestic political considerations.”

 

72년 전의 휴전선은 오늘도 그대로지만, 발언의 무게와 방향은 달랐다.
Seventy-two years later, the armistice line remains unchanged, but the weight and direction of the messages have clearly diverged.
