Seoul National University Students Publicly Oppose President Yoon's Impeachment

On December 17th at 11:30 AM, approximately 50 Seoul National University (SNU) students gathered at Acropolis Square in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, to publicly declare their opposition to the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol. Organized by SNU students advocating for the "protection of liberal democracy," the event featured participants holding national flags and banners with slogans such as “Nullify the illegal impeachment” and“Stop the steal.”
The hour-long declaration began with student speeches, followed by an open discussion. A student wearing SNU’s signature black long padded coat argued, “The emergency martial law declared by President Yoon did not infringe on fundamental rights. Even after its enactment on December 3rd, citizens freely assembled near the National Assembly to voice their opinions.” He emphasized that freedoms of the press, assembly, and association “were not excessively restricted to violate constitutional rights.”
The rally drew not only SNU students but also citizens, YouTubers, and families. Since December 11th, four SNU students have collected signatures from undergraduates, graduates, and alumni opposing impeachment, garnering around 300 supporters by the 14th.
In their statement, “A Call to Seoul National University Students Against Impeachment,” organizers wrote, “We initially felt confusion, but as events unfolded post-martial law, we realized South Korea’s liberal democracy faces grave threats.” Defending the martial law’s legality, one student asserted, “Martial law is a constitutional response to national crises. The president’s decision was unavoidable to maintain stability.”

Lee Seo-hyun, a 2021 English Literature major, addressed the crowd:“Freedom of expression must be respected. Citizens nationwide are rallying against impeachment. Debating martial law’s merits—whether support or criticism—is a constitutional right.” She added, “Though initially seen as outdated, public understanding grew after the president’s address revealed martial law forces first secured the National Election Commission.” Criticizing opposition parties, she accused them of “framing martial law as rebellion to suppress dialogue.”
By noon, the square swelled with attendees. Across the plaza, progressive student group Daejinryeon (Solidarity for University Students) staged a counter-protest supporting impeachment. Police erected barricades and separation tapes to prevent clashes.
Students also condemned the Democratic Party’s “legislative dictatorship,” arguing, “The National Assembly’s power should serve the people, not partisan agendas.” Regarding the government’s proposed 250,000 KRW ($180 USD) universal COVID-19 relief payment, a student objected: “Aid should target the vulnerable. Squandering 13 trillion KRU in taxpayer funds on blanket payouts is irresponsible—citizens will bear the debt.”
When asked about the impeachment trial, Lee, a 22-year-old history education major, replied: “We must await the Constitutional Court’s ruling with patience.”
Tensions between opposing groups underscored deepening political divides, as SNU’s campus becomes a microcosm of national debate.
