흑백 필름 속 되살아난 동해시, 북평의 옛 풍경

동해시 북평동은 오는 10월 12일부터 23일까지 배민호 작가의 사진전 「북평 그리고 북평장」을 개최한다.

Bukpyeong-dong in Donghae City will host photographer Bae Min-ho’s exhibition, Bukpyeong and Bukpyeong Market, from October 12 to 23.

이번 전시에는 동해시 출신 배민호 작가가 지난 20여 년간 카메라에 담아온 북평 지역의 옛 풍경 사진 36점이 선보인다. 재래시장의 활기와 골목 구석구석의 정취 등 시간이 흐르며 하나둘 사라져가는 북평의 일상이 흑백 필름 특유의 질감으로 되살아난다.

The exhibition will feature 36 photographs of Bukpyeong’s old scenery, captured over more than two decades by Bae, a Donghae native. From the bustle of the traditional market to the charm of its alleyways, everyday scenes gradually disappearing with time come alive through the distinctive texture of black-and-white film.

특히 이번 전시는 1796년(정조 20년) 개설돼 230년의 역사를 이어온 오일장 ‘북평장’을 조명한다. 북평장은 단순한 상거래의 장을 넘어, 이웃 간 경조사와 안부를 나누던 지역 공동체의 사랑방 역할을 해온 공간이다.

The exhibition particularly highlights Bukpyeong Market, a traditional market held every five days. Established in 1796, the 20th year of King Jeongjo’s reign, it has continued for 230 years. Beyond commerce, the market has served as a community gathering place where neighbors exchanged news and shared life’s joys and sorrows.

#배민호 작가는 “북평을 사랑하는 마음으로 곳곳을 찾아다니며 셔터를 눌렀다”며 “시대가 변하면서 하나둘 사라져가는 모습들을 기억하기 위해 기록으로 남기고 싶었다”고 소감을 전했다.

“My love for Bukpyeong led me to explore its many corners with my camera,” Bae said. “I wanted to document the scenes disappearing one by one as times change, so they can be remembered.”

동해시 지역의 삶과 풍경을 꾸준히 기록해 온 배민호 작가는 2005년 사진 작업을 시작해 인도와 유럽 등지에서 다수의 전시를 열었으며, 사진에세이 『묵호』(2024)와 『북평』(2025)을 잇달아 펴낸 바 있다.

Bae, who has consistently documented life and landscapes in Donghae, began his photographic work in 2005 and has held numerous exhibitions in India, Europe, and elsewhere. He also published the photo essay books Mukho (2024) and Bukpyeong (2025).

이번 전시는 무료로 관람할 수 있으며, 북평동행정복지센터 운영 시간 내에 방문하면 누구나 자유롭게 관람할 수 있다.

Admission is free, and everyone is welcome to visit during the operating hours of the Bukpyeong-dong Administrative Welfare Center.
