동해시 여름여행, 바다에서 연꽃 핀 농촌마을까지

바다와 계곡으로 향하는 여름 관광객들에게 동해시의 또 다른 여름 풍경을 보여주는 농촌마을 축제가 열린다.

A rural village festival is set to introduce visitors to another side of Donghae's summer, offering a peaceful countryside escape beyond its famous beaches and valleys.

동해시는 7월 24일부터 28일까지 5일간 단봉동 봉정마을 농촌체험관 일원에서 「제11회 봉정마을 연꽃 천연염색 축제」를 개최한다고 밝혔다.

Donghae City announced that the 11th Bongjeong Village Lotus & Natural Dyeing Festival will be held for five days, from July 24 to July 28, at the Bongjeong Village Rural Experience Center in Danbong-dong.

봉정마을 축제의 가장 큰 특징은 단순히 연꽃을 감상하는 데 그치지 않고 연꽃 경관과 농촌체험, 천연염색, 향토 먹거리를 하나의 마을에서 함께 경험할 수 있다는 점이다.

What makes this festival unique is that visitors can enjoy far more than beautiful lotus flowers. They can experience natural dyeing, rural village activities, and local cuisine—all within one charming community.

지난 2009년 농촌체험휴양마을로 지정된 봉정마을에는 3,600㎡ 규모의 ‘봉정연당’이 조성돼 있으며, 여름이면 홍련과 백련이 피어나 도심과 해변에서는 만나기 어려운 한적한 농촌의 여름 풍경을 선사한다. 하늘에서 바라본 마을 모습이 봉황을 닮아 ‘봉황새마을’로도 불린다.

Designated as a Rural Experience Village in 2009, Bongjeong Village is home to the 3,600㎡ "Bongjeong Lotus Pond," where vibrant red and white lotus flowers bloom each summer. The tranquil countryside scenery offers a refreshing contrast to the city's beaches. Seen from above, the village resembles a phoenix, earning it the nickname "Phoenix Village."

올해로 11회를 맞는 축제에서는 이러한 마을 자원을 활용해 스카프와 인견 반바지 천연염색, 연꽃등 만들기, 전통놀이를 비롯해 야외풀장 미꾸라지 맨손잡기 등 어린이를 동반한 가족들이 함께 참여할 수 있는 체험 프로그램을 운영한다.

Celebrating its 11th year, the festival offers a variety of family-friendly activities, including natural dyeing for scarves and rayon shorts, lotus lantern making, traditional Korean games, and even a fun loach-catching event in an outdoor pool for children.

특히 연잎밥과 연국수 등 연을 활용한 먹거리도 마련해 관광객들이 연꽃을 보고, 천연염색을 직접 체험하고, 마을 음식을 맛보며 봉정마을의 여름을 오감으로 경험할 수 있도록 했다.

Visitors can also enjoy delicious lotus-inspired dishes such as lotus leaf rice and lotus noodles, creating an experience that delights all five senses through flowers, crafts, flavors, and the warm atmosphere of the village.

올해는 지난해 3일이었던 축제 기간을 5일로 확대한다. 단순한 행사 규모 확대보다는 방문객들이 특정 시간대에 집중되지 않고 연꽃과 체험 프로그램을 보다 여유롭게 즐길 수 있도록 운영 기간을 넓히는 데 의미를 뒀다.

This year, the festival has been extended from three days to five. Rather than simply expanding the event, the longer schedule is intended to spread visitor numbers more evenly, allowing everyone to enjoy the lotus blossoms and activities at a relaxed pace.

동해시는 봉정마을 축제가 해변과 주요 관광지에 집중되는 여름 관광의 선택지를 농촌지역까지 넓히고, 관광객의 지역 내 이동과 체류를 유도하는 생활형 농촌관광 콘텐츠로 발전할 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다.

Donghae City hopes the festival will broaden summer tourism beyond beaches and major attractions, encouraging visitors to explore rural communities and enjoy longer, more meaningful stays in the region.

#김정남 농업기술센터소장은 “봉정마을 축제는 큰 규모의 관광축제라기보다 마을이 가진 연꽃과 농촌문화를 주민들이 직접 관광콘텐츠로 만들어 온 데 의미가 있다”며 “동해시를 찾는 관광객들이 바다와 계곡뿐 아니라 연꽃이 핀 농촌마을에도 들러 색다른 여름을 경험해 보시길 바란다”고 말했다.

Kim Jeong-nam, Director of the Agricultural Technology Center, said, "Rather than being a large-scale tourism festival, the true value of the Bongjeong Village Festival lies in how local residents have transformed their lotus flowers and rural culture into meaningful tourism content. We hope visitors to Donghae will discover not only our beaches and valleys, but also the unique beauty of a countryside village filled with blooming lotus flowers."
