남호초등학교 앞, 보행안전 강화

동해시는 어린이들의 안전한 통학환경을 조성하고 보행 안전을 강화하기 위해 남호초등학교 앞 사거리에 관내 첫 대각선횡단보도를 설치하고, 시범운영을 거쳐 7월 20일부터 본격 운영한다.

Donghae City has installed its first-ever diagonal crosswalk at the intersection in front of Namho Elementary School to create a safer walking environment for children. Following a trial period, the crosswalk officially began full operation on July 20.

남호초등학교 앞 사거리는 학생들의 등·하교는 물론 인근 공동주택 주민들의 일상적인 통행이 이어지는 생활권 교차로다. 과거 횡단보도를 건너던 어린이가 차량에 치이는 사고가 발생한 사례도 있어 안전한 보행환경 조성의 필요성이 꾸준히 제기돼 왔다.

The intersection serves not only as a major school route for students but also as a daily crossing point for residents living in nearby apartment complexes. In the past, a child was involved in a traffic accident while crossing the road, highlighting the urgent need for stronger pedestrian safety measures.

이에 시는 어린이와 보행자의 교통사고 위험을 줄이고 차량과 보행자의 이동 동선을 보다 명확하게 분리하기 위해 대각선횡단보도를 설치했다.

To reduce the risk of traffic accidents involving children and pedestrians, the city introduced the diagonal crosswalk, allowing pedestrians to cross in all directions during a dedicated signal phase while clearly separating vehicle and pedestrian movements.

#남태길 교통과장은 "어린이들의 안전한 등하굣길뿐만 아니라 주민들이 일상에서 안심하고 걸을 수 있는 보행환경을 만드는 것이 중요하다"며 "앞으로도 어린이보호구역과 주요 통학로를 지속적으로 점검해 시민이 체감할 수 있는 안전한 교통환경을 조성해 나가겠다"고 말했다.

Nam Tae-gil, Director of the Transportation Division, said, "Providing a safe walking environment is essential not only for children commuting to and from school but also for residents in their daily lives. We will continue improving school zones and major pedestrian routes to create a traffic environment where citizens can truly feel safe."

한편, 동해시는 지난 15일 '어린이 안전 Yellow 캠페인'을 실시하는 등 어린이보호구역 내 안전문화 확산과 교통사고 예방을 위한 다양한 교통안전 정책을 지속적으로 추진하고 있다.

Meanwhile, Donghae City continues to promote various traffic safety initiatives, including the recent Children's Safety Yellow Campaign held on July 15, to strengthen safety awareness in school zones and prevent traffic accidents involving children.
