Groundbreaking Begins for Donghae New Port Coal Terminal, Targeted for Completion in 2031

동해지방해양수산청은 동해권 시멘트 산업과 화력발전소 운영, 국가 기반산업에 필요한 원자재인 석탄의 안정적인 공급을 위해 동해신항 석탄부두 건설공사를 지난 6월 착수했다고 밝혔다.

The Donghae Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries announced that construction of the Donghae New Port Coal Terminal officially began in June to ensure a stable supply of coal, a key raw material supporting the cement industry, thermal power plants, and other essential national industries in the Donghae region.

이번 사업은 지속적으로 증가하는 동해항 석탄 물동량을 효율적으로 처리하기 위해 추진되는 것으로, 2031년 개장을 목표로 본격적인 건설이 진행된다.

The project aims to accommodate the steadily increasing volume of coal cargo handled at Donghae Port, with full-scale construction now underway and commercial operations scheduled to begin in 2031.

석탄부두가 완공되면 동해항의 만성적인 선박 대기와 화물 적체 문제가 크게 완화될 것으로 기대된다. 또한 인근 발전소와 산업단지에 안정적인 석탄 공급 체계를 구축해 물류 효율성을 높일 전망이다.

Once completed, the new terminal is expected to significantly reduce vessel congestion and cargo delays at Donghae Port while establishing a more reliable coal supply system for nearby power plants and industrial complexes, improving overall logistics efficiency.

아울러 사업 추진 과정과 운영 단계에서 다양한 일자리가 창출되고, 항만 관련 부대시설과 지역 산업도 함께 활성화될 것으로 예상된다. 이는 동해신항이 환동해권을 대표하는 물류 거점항으로 성장하는 기반이 될 것으로 기대된다.

The project is also expected to create new employment opportunities, stimulate port-related industries and supporting facilities, and strengthen the regional economy. In the long term, Donghae New Port is expected to grow into a major logistics hub for the East Sea Rim region.

동해지방해양수산청 관계자는 "동해신항 석탄부두 사업을 차질 없이 추진해 동해신항이 환동해권 중심항만으로 경쟁력을 갖출 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다"고 밝혔다.

An official from the Donghae Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries stated, "We will do our utmost to complete the Donghae New Port Coal Terminal as planned, strengthening Donghae New Port's competitiveness as a leading gateway port for the East Sea Rim region."
