“어른이 되는 가장 아름다운 순간”… 강릉향교서 열린 전통 성년례의 품격

강릉시는 ‘성년의 날’을 맞아 18일(월) 강릉향교 명륜당에서 ‘2026년 전통 성년례’를 개최했다.

On Monday, May 18, 강릉시 held the “2026 Traditional Coming-of-Age Ceremony” at the Myeongnyundang Hall of 강릉향교 to commemorate Coming-of-Age Day.

성년의 날(매년 5월 셋째 월요일)은 성인이 된 청소년을 축하하고 사회적 책임감을 일깨우는 법정기념일이다. 강릉시는 매년 전통 성년례를 개최해 성년의 의미를 되새기고, 성숙한 시민으로 성장할 수 있는 계기를 마련하고 있다.

 Coming-of-Age Day, observed every third Monday of May, is a national commemorative day celebrating young adults entering adulthood while encouraging a sense of social responsibility. Each year, Gangneung City hosts a traditional coming-of-age ceremony to reflect on the meaning of adulthood and to provide young people with an opportunity to grow into mature and responsible citizens.

강릉시가 주최하고 성균관여성유도회강릉지부가 주관한 이번 행사에는 올해 성년을 맞은 지역 대학생 20명이 참여했다. 특히 전통 유교식 절차에 따라 엄숙하면서도 품격 있게 진행된 성년례는 참여자들에게 일생에 한 번뿐인 특별한 전통문화 체험의 기회를 제공했다.

 Hosted by Gangneung City and organized by the Gangneung Branch of the Women’s Confucian Association, the event was attended by 20 local university students who officially became adults this year. Conducted in accordance with traditional Confucian rituals, the ceremony offered participants a solemn yet elegant once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience.

행사는 성년이 되는 이들이 어른의 복장인 평상복, 출입복, 예복을 차례로 갈아입으며 성인으로서의 책임과 예절을 갖추는 ‘삼가례(三加禮)’ 순으로 진행됐다. 이는 외적인 변화뿐 아니라 내면의 성숙과 책임감을 다짐하는 의미를 담고 있다.

 The ceremony featured the traditional “Samgarye (三加禮)” ritual, during which participants changed into three different sets of adult attire — everyday wear, formal outing clothes, and ceremonial garments — symbolizing the acquisition of adult responsibilities and etiquette. The ritual represents not only an outward transformation but also a commitment to inner maturity and accountability.

#강미정 인구가족과장은 “전통 성년례를 통해 예절의 소중함과 성인으로서의 책임감을 되새기길 바란다.”라며, “앞으로도 전통문화 계승과 청년들의 새출발을 지원하는 행사를 지속적으로 이어가겠다.”라고 밝혔다.

 Kang Mi-jung, head of the Population and Family Division, stated, “We hope this traditional coming-of-age ceremony reminds young adults of the importance of etiquette and the responsibilities that come with adulthood.” She added, “We will continue supporting events that preserve traditional culture and encourage meaningful new beginnings for young people.”
