“국보 죽서루에 울린 성년의 선언… 삼척 청춘들, 전통으로 어른이 되다”

“Traditional Coming-of-Age Ceremony Held at National Treasure Jukseoru Pavilion”

삼척시는 5월 18일 성년의 날을 맞아 국보 죽서루에서 ‘제24회 관례·계례 전통 성인식’을 개최했다.

 On May 18, in celebration of Coming-of-Age Day, Samcheok held the “24th Traditional Gwallye and Gyerye Coming-of-Age Ceremony” at Jukseoru Pavilion, a designated National Treasure of Korea.

성년의 날은 매년 5월 셋째 주 월요일로, 만 19세가 된 청년들이 법적·사회적 성인이 되었음을 축하하는 날이다. 과거에는 대체로 15세에서 20세 사이에 전통 성인식을 치르며 성인의 책임과 의무를 배우는 중요한 통과의례로 여겨졌다.

 Coming-of-Age Day is observed every third Monday of May in Korea, celebrating young people who officially become legal and social adults at the age of 19. In traditional Korean society, coming-of-age ceremonies were generally held between the ages of 15 and 20 and served as an important rite of passage emphasizing responsibility, duty, and maturity.

이번 행사는 죽서루 경내에서 진행됐으며, 올해 성년이 된 삼일고등학교 남녀 학생 20여 명이 관자(冠者)와 계자(笄者)로 참여해 우리 고유의 전통 성인문화를 직접 체험했다.

 The ceremony took place within the historic grounds of Jukseoru Pavilion, where approximately 20 male and female students from Samil High School, who came of age this year, participated respectively as “Gwanja” (young men entering adulthood) and “Gyeja” (young women entering adulthood), experiencing Korea’s traditional coming-of-age customs firsthand.

의식은 어른의 복장을 갖추는 ‘삼가례’를 시작으로, 관자에게 망건을 씌우고 계자의 머리를 정돈하는 ‘초가례’, 이어 관자에게 치포관을 씌우고 계자에게 비녀를 꽂는 ‘재가례’ 순으로 진행됐다.

 The ceremony began with “Samgarye,” in which participants changed into adult ceremonial attire. It continued with “Chogarye,” where traditional headwear was placed on the young men and the young women’s hair was formally arranged, followed by “Jaegarye,” during which ceremonial hats and traditional hairpins were bestowed upon the participants.

 이어 주례자의 성년 선언과 참가자들의 성년 선서가 이어지며 행사는 뜻깊게 마무리됐다.

 The event concluded with an official declaration of adulthood by the master of ceremonies and a pledge recited by the participants, marking their transition into adulthood with dignity and meaning.

삼척문화원이 주최한 이번 행사는 서구화 속에서 점차 사라져가는 전통문화를 계승하고 지역 청소년들에게 우리 문화의 가치를 알리기 위해 마련됐다. 지난 2001년 시작된 이후 올해로 24회를 맞으며 지역의 대표적인 전통문화 행사로 자리매김하고 있다.

 Hosted by Samcheok Cultural Center, the event was designed to preserve and pass down traditional Korean culture that has gradually faded amid Westernization, while also helping local youth appreciate the value of Korean heritage. Since its launch in 2001, the ceremony has now reached its 24th edition and has become one of the region’s most meaningful cultural traditions.

시 관계자는 “올해 성년이 된 청년들에게 축하를 전하며, 이번 전통 예절 체험이 우리 문화에 대한 자긍심과 함께 사회의 책임 있는 구성원으로 성장하는 계기가 되기를 바란다”고 말했다.

 A city official stated, “We sincerely congratulate the young adults celebrating their coming of age this year and hope this traditional etiquette experience inspires pride in Korean culture while helping them grow into responsible members of society.”
