Samcheok City Expands Interpretation Services at Geological Attractions

삼척시가 삼척 지질공원을 찾는 탐방객들에게 보다 전문적이고 흥미로운 정보를 제공하기 위해 지질공원해설사를 주요 명소에 배치하고 현장 중심의 해설 프로그램을 운영한다.

Samcheok is launching on-site interpretation programs with certified geopark interpreters at key attractions to provide visitors with more professional and engaging geological information.

지질공원해설사는 지질·지형·생태적 가치를 탐방객 눈높이에 맞춰 설명하는 전문 인력이다. 시는 현재 ‘초곡용굴 촛대바위길’로 유명한 초곡 해안침식지형을 중심으로 해설사를 배치하고 있다. 이곳은 해식동굴과 시스택(촛대바위) 등 파랑 작용이 만들어낸 독특한 해안지형을 직접 관찰할 수 있는 삼척의 대표 관광지다.

 Geopark interpreters are trained professionals who explain the geological, topographical, and ecological significance of natural sites in an accessible way for visitors. Samcheok City currently operates interpretation services mainly at the Chogok Coastal Erosion Landform area, famous for the “Chogok Yonggul Candle Rock Trail.” Visitors can closely observe unique coastal formations created by wave erosion, including sea caves and sea stacks such as the iconic Candle Rock.

※ 대이리 동굴지대는 현재 운영 여건에 따라 해설사 배치를 일시 중단했으며, 향후 재개할 예정이다.

시는 이달부터 초당굴과 소한계곡 생태탐방로에도 지질공원해설사를 새롭게 배치했다. 초당굴과 소한계곡은 석회암 지대의 카르스트 지형과 동굴 지하수의 특성을 동시에 살펴볼 수 있는 대표적인 지질 명소다. 특히 소한계곡은 국내 유일의 민물김 자생지로, 지질과 생태가 결합된 차별화된 교육·탐방 자원으로 주목받고 있다.

 Beginning this month, the city has also newly assigned geopark interpreters to Chodang Cave and the Sohan Valley Ecological Trail. These sites are renowned geological attractions where visitors can explore karst topography formed in limestone regions along with the characteristics of underground cave water systems. In particular, Sohan Valley is gaining attention as Korea’s only natural habitat for freshwater laver, making it a unique educational and ecological exploration site where geology and biodiversity coexist.

해설 프로그램은 정기 휴무일을 제외한 관광지 운영일에 맞춰 주말 중심으로 운영된다. 시는 앞으로 탐방 수요와 현장 여건을 고려해 해설 인력과 운영 범위를 점차 확대할 계획이다.

 The interpretation programs are mainly operated on weekends during the regular operating days of the tourist sites, excluding scheduled closure days. The city plans to gradually expand both the number of interpreters and the scope of operations based on visitor demand and site conditions.

시 관계자는 “지질공원해설사 운영을 통해 탐방객들이 삼척의 지질 자원을 더욱 깊이 이해할 수 있기를 기대한다”라며 “앞으로도 삼척 지질공원의 가치를 쉽고 흥미롭게 전달할 수 있도록 다양한 프로그램을 마련하겠다”라고 밝혔다.

 A city official stated, “We hope that the geopark interpreter program will help visitors gain a deeper understanding of Samcheok’s geological resources. We will continue developing diverse programs to communicate the value of Samcheok Geopark in an easy and engaging way.”

한편, 삼척시는 지난해 말 국가지질공원 후보지 인증 신청서를 제출한 이후 로고·캐릭터 개발과 국제 학술교류 등을 추진하며 국가지질공원 최종 인증을 위해 행정력을 집중하고 있다.

Meanwhile, after submitting its application for designation as a National Geopark candidate site late last year, Samcheok City has been focusing administrative efforts on achieving final certification through projects such as logo and character development, as well as international academic exchanges.
