“시민이 만드는 환영의 도시”… 동해, 골목마다 도민체전 준비 분주

“A City Welcoming Guests by Citizens’ Hands” … Donghae Transforms Neighborhood by Neighborhood for the Provincial Sports Festival

강원특별자치도 동해시가 강원도민체육대회를 앞두고 도시 전체를 하나의 ‘환영 무대’로 바꾸고 있다. 관 주도의 행사 준비를 넘어, 각 동 주민들이 직접 거리와 골목, 청사와 하천변을 가꾸며 손님맞이에 나선 모습은 단순한 체육행사를 넘어 지역 공동체의 자존심을 보여주는 풍경이 되고 있다.

As the Gangwon Provincial Sports Festival approaches, Donghae City in Gangwon State is transforming itself into a citywide stage of welcome. Beyond government-led preparations, residents in each neighborhood are taking part in cleaning streets, decorating public spaces, and improving local scenery — turning the event into a reflection of community pride rather than merely a sporting occasion.

동호동 주민들은 주요 도로변과 생활권 일대에서 쓰레기 수거와 환경정비 활동에 나섰다. 이른 아침부터 이어진 정비 작업은 단순한 청소 이상의 의미를 담고 있었다. 주민들은 “동해를 찾는 선수단과 방문객들에게 가장 먼저 기억될 것은 도시의 첫인상”이라고 말하며 자발적인 참여를 이어갔다.

In Dongho-dong, residents gathered along major roads and neighborhood streets to carry out cleanup and beautification efforts. Beginning early in the morning, the activities carried meaning beyond routine maintenance. “The first thing athletes and visitors will remember is the city’s first impression,” residents said, explaining their voluntary participation.

망상동은 보다 상징적인 방식으로 손님맞이에 나섰다. 청사 외벽에는 지역의 상징인 메뚜기를 형상화한 LED 조형물이 설치됐다. 낮에는 지역의 유쾌한 정체성을 드러내고, 밤에는 빛나는 포토존으로 변신하는 이 조형물은 작은 해안 마을의 감각적인 환대 방식을 보여준다.

Mangsang-dong chose a more symbolic approach to welcoming visitors. On the exterior wall of the local administrative office, an LED sculpture shaped like a grasshopper — a symbol of the region — has been installed. By day, it expresses the playful identity of the community; by night, it transforms into a glowing photo spot, showcasing the town’s creative and warm hospitality.

동해시는 체전 개막 전까지 각 동별 환경정비와 경관 개선 활동을 지속 확대할 계획이다. 도시 곳곳에서 이어지는 시민들의 움직임은 스포츠 이벤트를 넘어 “사람이 도시를 만든다”는 오래된 문장을 다시 떠올리게 한다.

Donghae City plans to continue neighborhood-level cleanup and landscape improvement projects until the opening of the sports festival. The steady movement of citizens across the city serves as a reminder that beyond infrastructure and events, it is ultimately people who shape the spirit of a city.
