Gangwon State Holds the 32nd Memorial Service for Fishermen Lost at Sea

“Honoring the Souls of Fishermen Lost in Maritime Accidents” Held Solemnly at the Memorial Tower in Hyeonbuk-myeon, Yangyang

강원특별자치도가 바다에서 생업을 이어오다 불의의 사고로 생을 마감한 어업인들의 넋을 기리기 위한 ‘제32회 해난어업인 위령제’를 5월 10일 양양군 현북면 해난어업인 위령탑에서 엄숙히 개최했다.

Gangwon State solemnly held the 32nd Memorial Service for Fishermen Lost at Sea on May 10 at the Memorial Tower for Fishermen Lost at Sea in Hyeonbuk-myeon, Yangyang County, to honor fishermen who lost their lives while making a living at sea.

이번 위령제는 양양군수협 주관으로 열렸으며, 유가족과 해양수산 관계자, 지역 어업인 등 약 300여 명이 참석한 가운데 △위패 봉안 △진혼무 △추도사 △헌화 및 분향 등의 순으로 진행됐다.

Hosted by the Yangyang County Fisheries Cooperative, the memorial ceremony was attended by approximately 300 people, including bereaved families, fisheries officials, and local fishermen. The event included spirit tablet enshrinement, memorial dance performances, commemorative addresses, flower offerings, and incense burning.

특히 올해는 강릉 1위, 속초 1위, 삼척 2위, 고성 3위, 양양 2위 등 총 9위의 신규 위패가 봉안돼 참석자들의 안타까움을 더했다. 유가족들은 더 이상 새로운 위패가 추가되지 않는 날이 오기를 간절히 바랐다.

This year, nine new spirit tablets were enshrined — one from Gangneung, one from Sokcho, two from Samcheok, three from Goseong, and two from Yangyang — deepening the sorrow of attendees. Bereaved families expressed their heartfelt hope that no more new spirit tablets would need to be added in the future.

해난어업인 위령제는 바다를 삶의 터전으로 삼아온 어업인들의 숭고한 희생정신을 기리고, 남겨진 유가족들을 위로하기 위해 매년 5월 10일 이어지고 있다.

The memorial service has been held annually on May 10 to honor the noble sacrifices of fishermen whose lives were devoted to the sea and to comfort the families left behind.

한편 강원특별자치도는 2005년부터 해난어업인 유가족 지원사업을 통해 생활안정비와 학자금 등을 지원해 왔으며, 현재까지 총 6,134세대에 17억 4,900만 원 규모의 지원을 이어왔다. 올해에도 8,700만 원의 예산을 확보해 동해안 6개 시군 유가족들에게 생활안정비를 지원할 계획이다.

Meanwhile, since 2005, Gangwon State has continuously provided living support funds and scholarships to bereaved families of fishermen lost at sea. To date, a total of 1.749 billion KRW has been provided to 6,134 households. This year, the province has secured an additional 87 million KRW to support bereaved families across six coastal cities and counties along the East Sea.

#남진우 강원특별자치도 해양수산국장은 “바다를 삶의 터전으로 삼은 어업인의 희생을 결코 잊지 않겠다”며 “앞으로도 어업인의 안전과 복지 향상을 위한 정책을 지속적으로 확대해 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.

Nam Jin-woo, Director of the Marine and Fisheries Bureau of Gangwon State, stated, “We will never forget the sacrifices made by fishermen who devoted their lives to the sea,” adding, “We will continue expanding policies to improve the safety and welfare of fishermen.”
