Gangwon Cultural Foundation to Open Special Exhibition Tracing the Breath of Origins: 20 Stories of Gangwon Artists on May 28 in Chuncheon

강원특별자치도의 자연과 기억, 그리고 삶의 서사가 대한민국 동시대 미술의 ‘시원(始原)’으로 되살아난다. 강원문화재단은 오는 5월 28일부터 6월 18일까지 춘천문화예술회관 전시장에서 기획전 《시원(始原)의 숨결을 따라 : 20인의 강원 이야기》를 개최한다고 밝혔다.

The landscapes, memories, and narratives of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province are being reborn as the “origin” of Korean contemporary art. Gangwon Cultural Foundation announced that the special exhibition Tracing the Breath of Origins: 20 Stories of Gangwon Artists will be held from May 28 to June 18 at Chuncheon Culture & Art Center.

이번 전시는 강원에서 태어나 예술적 뿌리를 형성한 20인의 시각예술가들이 자신의 삶과 예술 세계를 통해 ‘강원’이라는 정신적 원형을 다시 들여다보는 자리다. 세계적인 거장부터 중견 작가까지 참여하며, 단순한 회고전이 아닌 ‘살아있는 예술 아카이브’로 기획됐다.

The exhibition brings together 20 visual artists who were born in Gangwon or deeply shaped by the region, revisiting Gangwon as the spiritual origin of their artistic worlds. Featuring globally acclaimed masters and leading mid-career artists, the exhibition is designed not as a retrospective, but as a “living archive” of art and memory.

특히 60년 화업의 거장 전광영은 홍천의 어린 시절과 한약방 기억을 바탕으로 한국적 ‘정(情)’과 보자기 문화를 한지 작업으로 승화시켰다. 그의 대표작 〈Aggregation〉 시리즈는 한국 현대미술의 세계화를 상징하는 작품으로 평가받는다.

Veteran artist Chun Kwang Young reflects memories of his childhood in Hongcheon and traditional herbal medicine shops through his iconic hanji-based works that reinterpret Korea’s culture of jeong and wrapping cloth traditions. His renowned Aggregation series is regarded as a landmark of Korean contemporary art on the global stage.

또한 목탄 화가 이재삼은 영월 청령포의 달빛과 물안개를 오직 목탄만으로 구현하며, 강원의 서정을 보편적 미학으로 확장한다. 김태호는 치악산 자락의 유년 기억을 수백 번의 덧칠과 수행적 회화 과정으로 현재와 연결하며 시간의 흔적을 캔버스에 새긴다.

Meanwhile, charcoal artist Lee Jae-sam recreates the moonlight and mist of Cheongnyeongpo in Yeongwol using only charcoal, transforming Gangwon’s lyrical landscape into universal aesthetics. Kim Tae-ho revisits childhood memories beneath Mt. Chiaksan through layered, meditative painting processes that connect past and present.

춘천의 전란과 시대의 상처를 화폭에 담아온 황효창은 ‘인형’이라는 상징을 통해 인간 실존과 시대의 고통을 형상화했으며, 안재홍은 양구의 혹독한 겨울과 겨울나무를 통해 강원도의 생명력과 강인함을 표현했다.

Artist Hwang Hyo-chang, who has long portrayed the scars of war and modern Korean history, visualizes human existence and suffering through symbolic “doll” imagery. Ahn Jae-hong captures the resilience and vitality of Gangwon through the harsh winter trees of Yanggu.

전시에는 대한민국예술원 회원이자 소설가인 전상국이 서문 「강원의 오늘, 아침 무지개로 피어나다」를 통해 참여해 깊이를 더했다. 그는 “고향은 예술가들이 찾고자 하는 미적 영감의 발원”이라며, 강원의 흙과 바람이 예술혼의 원천이 된다고 강조했다.

The exhibition is further enriched by a special foreword written by acclaimed novelist Jeon Sang-guk, a member of the National Academy of Arts of Korea. In his essay Gangwon Today Blossoms into a Morning Rainbow, he describes hometowns as “the fountainhead of artistic inspiration,” emphasizing that the soil and winds of Gangwon nurture artistic souls.

이번 전시는 2025년 한 해 동안 작가들을 직접 만나 인터뷰하고 기록한 결과물을 바탕으로 구성됐다. 기획을 맡은 신지희 전문위원은 “작가 개인의 삶에서 길어 올린 이야기가 오히려 가장 강력한 보편성을 가진다”며 “이번 전시가 지역을 넘어 인간 존재의 본향을 성찰하는 예술적 기록이 되길 바란다”고 말했다.

The exhibition was developed from extensive face-to-face interviews and documentation conducted throughout 2025. Curator Shin Ji-hee explained, “Stories drawn from individual lives ultimately possess the strongest universality,” adding that she hopes the exhibition will become an artistic record that transcends regional boundaries and reflects on the origins of human existence.

한편 전시는 매주 월요일과 6월 3일 지방선거일에는 휴관하며, 별도의 개막식 없이 운영된다.

The exhibition will be closed every Monday and on June 3, Election Day, and no separate opening ceremony will be held.
