Wonju High School Holds Student Council-Led Memorial Event for the 12th Anniversary of the Sewol Ferry Disaster

원주고등학교(교장 이승철)는 4월 16일(목), 세월호 참사 12주기를 맞아 학생자치회 주관으로 교내 추념 행사를 운영했다.

Wonju High School (Principal Lee Seung-cheol) held a school-wide memorial event on Thursday, April 16, marking the 12th anniversary of the Sewol Ferry disaster, organized by the student council.

이날 원주고등학교 학생회는 세월호 참사 12주기를 맞아 “잊지 않겠습니다, 기억하겠습니다”를 주제로 추념 행사를 진행했다. 이번 행사는 지난 4월 14일까지 SNS(인스타그램) 공모를 통해 학생들이 직접 선정한 표어를 바탕으로 기획돼 의미를 더했다.

On this day, the student council of Wonju High School held a memorial event under the theme “We will not forget, we will remember,” in commemoration of the 12th anniversary of the Sewol Ferry disaster. The event gained additional significance as it was planned based on a slogan selected directly by students through a social media (Instagram) contest held until April 14.

학생회는 아침 등굣길에 참사의 아픔을 되새기고 안전 의식을 높이기 위한 알림 활동을 펼쳤으며, 점심시간에는 세월호 관련 도서를 소개하고 ‘416 국민안전의 날’ 관련 퀴즈 행사를 운영해 416재단 공식 굿즈를 배부했다.

The student council carried out awareness campaigns during the morning commute to school, encouraging reflection on the tragedy and promoting safety consciousness. During lunchtime, they introduced books related to the Sewol disaster and organized a quiz event about “April 16 National Safety Day,” distributing official goods from the 416 Foundation.

또한 전 교직원과 학생들은 가슴에 노란 리본 배지를 착용하며 비극적인 사고의 재발 방지를 함께 기원했다. 특히 이번 행사에서는 지난 4월 6일 하굣길 구급차 관련 사고로 안타깝게 세상을 떠난 원주 지역 중학생을 추모하는 시간을 함께 마련해 숙연한 분위기를 더했다.

In addition, all faculty members and students wore yellow ribbon badges on their chests, expressing their collective hope to prevent such tragedies from happening again. Notably, the event also included a moment of remembrance for a middle school student from Wonju who tragically lost their life in an ambulance-related accident on April 6, adding to the solemn atmosphere.

행사에 참여한 2학년 학생은 “세월호 12주기 추념 행사를 준비하며 마음이 무거웠는데, 최근 우리 지역 후배가 안타까운 사고를 당했다는 소식을 접하고 다시는 이런 일이 반복되지 않기를 바라는 마음으로 참여했다”라며, “어른들이 우리가 안전하게 배움에 전념할 수 있는 세상을 만들어주길 바라며, 나 또한 어른이 되었을 때 주변을 안전하게 지킬 수 있는 사람이 되겠다”라고 말했다.

A second-year student who participated in the event said, “While preparing for the 12th anniversary memorial of the Sewol disaster, I felt a heavy heart. After hearing about the recent tragic accident involving a younger student in our community, I took part with the hope that such incidents will never happen again.” The student added, “I hope adults will create a world where we can safely focus on our education, and when I become an adult, I will strive to be someone who helps keep others safe.”
