버려진 검역소의 기적… 동해 ‘갤러리바란’, 작은 미니어처에 담긴 큰 삶의 이야기

강원 동해시 발한지구의 한쪽, 오랜 시간 사람들의 발길이 끊겼던 옛 검역소가 있다.

On one side of Donghae’s Balhan district, there stood an old quarantine station, long abandoned and forgotten.

수십 년의 시간 동안 방치되며 도시의 상처처럼 남아 있던 그 공간은 이제 ‘갤러리바란’이라는 이름으로 다시 숨을 쉰다.

Left unattended for decades, once a scar in the city, the space now breathes again under the name “Gallery Baran.”

그 안에서는 지금, 아주 작은 세계가 펼쳐지고 있다.

Inside, a very small world is unfolding.

‘나의 작은 아틀리에’라는 이름의 미니어처 특별전은 결혼이민자와 지역 주민들이 함께 만든 삶의 조각들을 전시한다.

A miniature exhibition titled “My Little Atelier” presents fragments of life created by marriage immigrants and local residents together.

손끝으로 빚어낸 작은 집, 식탁, 그리고 일상의 풍경들은 단순한 작품을 넘어 각자의 시간과 기억을 담고 있다.

Tiny houses, dining tables, and everyday scenes shaped by hand go beyond mere crafts—they hold personal memories and lived time.

이 전시는 말을 건네지 않는다.

This exhibition does not speak in words.

대신, ‘집’이라는 가장 보편적인 언어로 서로를 이해하게 만든다.

Instead, it invites understanding through the universal language of “home.”

낯선 땅에서 살아온 이들의 시간과 감정이, 작은 공간 안에서 조용히 번져간다.

Within these miniature spaces, the emotions and journeys of those who lived in a foreign land quietly unfold.

이번 전시를 계기로 동해시 도시재생지원센터와 동해시가족센터는 협약을 맺었다.

Through this exhibition, the Donghae Urban Regeneration Support Center and the Donghae Family Center have entered into a partnership.

이 협약은 단순한 행정적 연결을 넘어, 사람과 사람이 이어지는 기반을 만든다.

More than an administrative agreement, it lays the foundation for meaningful human connections.

앞으로 이 공간은 전시를 넘어 지역 공동체가 서로를 이해하고 만나게 하는 플랫폼으로 확장될 것이다.

Going forward, this space will grow beyond exhibitions into a platform where the community meets, understands, and connects.

갤러리바란의 변화는 숫자로도 증명된다.

The transformation of Gallery Baran is reflected in numbers as well.

운영 첫해, 7회의 전시와 1,996명의 방문객.

In its first year, it hosted 7 exhibitions and welcomed 1,996 visitors.

그리고 그 다음 해, 11회의 전시와 4,507명의 발걸음.

The following year, 11 exhibitions drew 4,507 visitors.

하지만 이 공간의 진짜 성과는 숫자보다 사람의 기억 속에 남는다는 데 있다.

Yet its true success lies not in numbers, but in the memories it leaves in people.

버려졌던 공간이 예술이 되고,

An abandoned space becomes art,

낯선 사람들이 이웃이 되며,

Strangers become neighbors,

작은 작품이 큰 공감을 만들어낸다.

And small creations spark deep empathy.

도시는 그렇게 다시 살아난다.

That is how a city comes back to life.

그리고 그 시작은, 아주 작고 섬세한 이야기에서 비롯된다.

And it begins with stories—small, delicate, yet profoundly human.
