은둔형 청소년, 다시 세상으로 — 문밖에서 시작된 작은 기적

문을 닫고 세상과 거리를 두던 아이들이, 조심스럽게 다시 문을 열기 시작했다. 강원 동해시에서 진행된 ‘다시연결’ 프로그램은 그 첫걸음을 함께했다. 단 7명의 이야기일지라도, 그 안에는 세상과 다시 이어지려는 용기와 희망이 담겨 있다.

Children who once shut their doors to the world are beginning to open them again, step by step. In Donghae City, the “Reconnect” program has walked alongside them in that first brave step. Though it may be the story of just seven individuals, it holds within it courage and hope to reconnect with the world.

은둔형 학교밖청소년은 쉽게 드러나지 않는다. 그들의 시간은 방 안에서 조용히 흐르고, 세상은 그들을 모른 채 지나간다. 그러나 이번 프로그램은 ‘또래’라는 다리를 놓았다. 같은 또래의 시선과 공감은 닫힌 마음을 여는 가장 따뜻한 열쇠가 되었다.

Hidden youth outside the school system rarely reveal themselves. Their time flows quietly within closed rooms, while the world passes by unaware. This program, however, built a bridge through peers. The empathy and understanding of those their own age became the warmest key to unlocking closed hearts.

그 결과, 7명의 청소년이 세상과 다시 연결됐다. 그중 2명은 검정고시에 도전했고, 6명은 진로와 직업을 탐색하는 프로그램에 참여했다. 숫자는 작지만, 한 걸음 내디딘 변화는 결코 작지 않다.

As a result, seven youths reconnected with society. Among them, two took the national qualification exam, while six joined career exploration programs. The numbers may seem small, but the steps they’ve taken are anything but insignificant.

은둔에서 벗어나는 일은 단순한 ‘참여’가 아니다. 그것은 두려움을 마주하는 일이고, 다시 상처받을 수도 있는 세상으로 나아가는 선택이다. 그래서 한 번의 손길이 아니라, 지속적인 관심과 기다림이 필요하다.

Breaking free from isolation is not just about participation. It means facing fear and choosing to step back into a world where one might be hurt again. That is why it requires not a single gesture, but continuous care and patient waiting.

동해시학교밖청소년지원센터는 앞으로도 더 다양한 방식으로 아이들에게 다가갈 계획이다. 다채널 접근과 관계 중심의 지원을 통해, ‘발굴’이 아닌 ‘연결’의 의미를 확장해 나간다.

The Donghae Youth Support Center for Out-of-School Youth plans to continue reaching out in more diverse ways. Through multi-channel approaches and relationship-based support, it seeks to expand the meaning of not just “finding” youth, but truly “connecting” with them.

문밖으로 나서는 그 한 걸음.

그것은 누군가에게는 평범한 일상이지만, 누군가에게는 인생을 바꾸는 용기다.
