동해시가 여름 성수기를 앞두고 묵호 구도심의 보행환경을 대대적으로 개선하며, 주민과 관광객 모두를 위한 ‘걷고 싶은 거리’ 조성에 나섰다.

Ahead of the peak summer season, Donghae City is undertaking a major pedestrian environment improvement project in the old downtown area of Mukho, aiming to create a “walkable street” for both residents and visitors.

이번 사업은 묵호역에서 발한삼거리, 나아가 묵호항으로 이어지는 생활도로 구간을 중심으로 추진되며, 일상 속 통학·통근·장보기 등 주민 이용이 많은 구간의 안전성과 편의성을 높이는 데 초점을 맞췄다.

The project focuses on the everyday road connecting Mukho Station to Balhan Intersection and further to Mukho Port, prioritizing safety and convenience for routes frequently used by residents for commuting, school, and daily errands.

특히 기존에 지적되어 온 굴다리 내부 조명 부족, 보도 단차, 가로환경 미비 등 보행 불편 요소를 개선해 체감도 높은 생활밀착형 사업으로 추진된다.

In particular, long-standing issues such as insufficient lighting in the underpass, uneven sidewalks, and poor streetscape conditions will be addressed, making this a highly practical, citizen-focused improvement project.

동해시는 기존 시설을 전면 철거하는 방식이 아닌, 현재 이용 여건을 유지하면서 굴다리 정비와 보도 개선, 조명 확충 등을 통해 효율성과 체감도를 동시에 높이는 전략을 선택했다.

Rather than completely replacing existing infrastructure, Donghae City has chosen a strategy that maintains current usability while enhancing efficiency and user experience through targeted upgrades to the underpass, sidewalks, and lighting.

사업은 단계적으로 추진된다. 4월에는 묵호역 굴다리 환경 개선과 발한삼거리 일대 보도 정비를 우선 시행해 주민들이 즉각적으로 변화를 체감할 수 있도록 한다.

The project will be implemented in phases. In April, improvements to the Mukho Station underpass and sidewalk maintenance around Balhan Intersection will be carried out first, allowing residents to immediately experience the changes.

이어 5월에는 미디어월(Media Wall), 레터링 조형물, 포토존 등 다양한 공공디자인 요소를 도입해 지역의 정체성을 담은 ‘이색 명품 거리’로 완성도를 높일 계획이다.

In May, public design elements such as a media wall, lettering sculptures, and photo zones will be introduced, transforming the area into a distinctive landmark street that reflects the identity of the region.

특히 시는 여름 관광 성수기 이전에 주요 공정을 마무리하고, 공사를 장기간 분산하기보다 단기간 집중 추진함으로써 시민 불편을 최소화할 방침이다.

The city plans to complete major construction before the summer tourism peak and minimize inconvenience by concentrating the work within a short period rather than spreading it out over a long duration.

공사 기간 동안 일부 보행 동선 변경과 불편이 예상되지만, 안전시설 확충과 안내 표지 강화, 체계적인 공정 관리로 시민 안전과 편의를 확보한다는 계획이다.

Although temporary pedestrian detours and inconvenience are expected during construction, the city will ensure safety and convenience through enhanced safety facilities, clear signage, and systematic project management.

또한 사전 안내와 현장 소통을 강화해 인근 상가와 주민들이 공사 일정을 충분히 인지하고 협조할 수 있도록 지원할 예정이다.

Additionally, the city will strengthen prior notifications and on-site communication so that nearby businesses and residents are fully informed and can cooperate with the project schedule.

#전미애 도시정비과장은 “이번 사업은 주민들이 매일 이용하는 길을 보다 안전하고 쾌적하게 바꾸는 데 큰 의미가 있다”며 “다소의 불편이 있더라도 시민 여러분의 이해와 협조를 부탁드린다”고 밝혔다.

Jeon Mi-ae, head of the Urban Maintenance Division, stated, “This project is meaningful in making everyday streets safer and more comfortable for residents. We kindly ask for citizens’ understanding and cooperation despite temporary inconveniences.”
