“단순함의 끝에서 만나는 깊은 울림”… 장욱진 미공개 작품 최초 공개

강릉시립미술관 솔올은 특별기획전시 《장욱진의 대화: 서로가 된 풍경》을 오는 4월 1일부터 7월 5일까지 개최한다.

Gangneung Solol Art Museum will host the special exhibition “Chang Ucchin: Dialogues – Landscapes Becoming One” from April 1 to July 5.

이번 전시는 유화, 먹그림, 도자화, 판화 등 다양한 매체의 작품 150여 점을 선보이며, 장욱진 예술 세계의 폭넓은 스펙트럼을 조명한다.

The exhibition presents around 150 works across various media—including oil paintings, ink drawings, ceramic paintings, and prints—highlighting the breadth of Chang Ucchin’s artistic world.

장욱진(1917–1990)은 김환기, 유영국과 함께 한국 근현대 미술을 대표하는 2세대 서양화가로 평가된다.

Chang Ucchin (1917–1990) is regarded as one of Korea’s leading second-generation Western-style painters, alongside Kim Whanki and Yoo Youngkuk.

그는 도쿄 제국미술학교(현 무사시노미술대학)를 졸업한 후, 국립박물관에서 근무하며 한국 전통미에 대한 깊은 통찰을 쌓았다.

After graduating from the Imperial Art School in Tokyo (now Musashino Art University), he worked at the National Museum of Korea, where he developed a deep understanding of Korean aesthetics.

1954년부터 1960년까지 서울대학교 미술대학 교수로 재직했으며, 신사실파를 비롯해 2·9동인, 앙가주망 동인 등 다양한 미술 단체에서 활동했다.

From 1954 to 1960, he served as a professor at Seoul National University’s College of Fine Arts and participated in key art groups such as the New Realism Group, the 2·9 Group, and the Engagement Group.

장욱진은 평생 자연과 일상의 소박한 풍경을 화폭에 담아왔으며, 이번 전시는 그 세계를 ‘대화’라는 새로운 관점으로 풀어낸다.

Throughout his life, Chang captured simple scenes of nature and everyday life, and this exhibition reinterprets his work through the lens of “dialogue.”

작품들은 반복되는 소재 속에서도 시선과 태도의 미묘한 변화를 드러내며, 작가의 내면적 흐름을 보여준다.

His works reveal subtle shifts in perspective and attitude within recurring motifs, reflecting the artist’s evolving inner world.

특히 말년의 작품들은 더욱 간결해진 표현과 넓은 여백을 통해 삶과 예술의 본질에 대한 깊은 성찰을 전달한다.

In his later years, his paintings became more minimalistic, with expansive empty spaces that convey profound reflections on life and art.

이번 전시는 장욱진문화재단과의 협력으로 진행되며, 유화 2점과 먹그림 8점이 최초로 공개된다.

In collaboration with the Chang Ucchin Foundation, the exhibition also unveils two oil paintings and eight ink drawings for the first time.

#심규만 강릉시립미술관 관장은 “이토록 심플한 그림을 통해 시대를 초월한 공감과 깊은 사유의 시간을 전하고자 한다”고 밝혔다.

Director Shim Gyu-man stated, “Through such simplicity, we aim to offer a timeless sense of empathy and a space for deep contemplation.”

전시는 월요일을 제외한 오전 10시부터 오후 6시까지 관람 가능하며, 도슨트 프로그램은 화~금 오후 2시와 4시, 토요일 오전 11시에 운영된다.

The exhibition is open from 10 AM to 6 PM, closed on Mondays. Docent tours are available Tuesday to Friday at 2 PM and 4 PM, and on Saturdays at 11 AM.
