“버려진 땅이 꽃밭으로”… 동해시, 시민 힘으로 ‘기적의 1,500철쭉 프로젝트’ 시작됐다

동해시가 시민이 기부한 철쭉 1,500본을 활용해 도심 속 방치된 유휴지를 아름다운 녹지공간으로 재탄생시키는 ‘동별 유휴공간 마을 가꾸기 사업’을 추진한다.

Donghae City announced that it will promote the “Community Idle Space Greening Project,” transforming neglected urban idle land into vibrant green spaces using 1,500 azalea trees donated by citizens.

이번 사업은 시민이 수목 기부와 식재 과정에 직접 참여하는 ‘시민 주도형 녹색 행정’의 일환으로 추진된다. 시는 기부받은 철쭉을 활용해 관내 10개 동의 유휴지와 자투리 공간을 녹지화할 계획이다.

This initiative is part of a “citizen-led green governance” model, where residents actively participate in both donating trees and planting them. The city plans to utilize the donated azaleas to green idle spaces and small vacant lots across 10 administrative districts.

각 동에서는 주민 의견을 반영해 식재 대상지를 선정했으며, 본격적인 식재 시기에 맞춰 사회단체와 주민들이 함께 참여해 도심 속 녹지공간 조성에 나설 예정이다.

Each district selected planting sites based on residents’ input, and local community groups and citizens will take part in the planting process during the appropriate season.

이번에 식재되는 철쭉은 건조한 환경에서도 잘 자라고 봄철 화려한 꽃을 피우는 수종으로, 도심 경관 개선과 시민 휴식 공간 확충에 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

The azaleas, known for their resilience in dry conditions and vibrant spring blossoms, are expected to enhance the cityscape while providing more relaxing green spaces for residents.

동해시는 식재 이후에도 주민과 협력해 지속적인 유지·관리 체계를 구축할 방침이다.

Donghae City also plans to establish a sustainable maintenance system in cooperation with residents after the planting is completed.

#심광진 녹지과장은 “시민의 자발적인 수목 기부 덕분에 방치된 유휴지가 생기 넘치는 휴식 공간으로 거듭날 수 있게 됐다”며 “앞으로도 시민과 함께하는 녹지사업을 지속 확대하겠다”고 밝혔다.

Shim Gwang-jin, head of the Green Space Division, stated, “Thanks to the voluntary donations from citizens, neglected spaces can now be reborn as lively resting areas. We will continue to expand green projects in collaboration with the community.”

한편, 시는 이번 사업을 계기로 시민 체감도가 높은 녹지 정책을 지속적으로 확대해 나갈 계획이다.

Meanwhile, the city plans to further expand citizen-oriented green policies following this initiative.
