강원특별자치도립화목원, ‘2026 꼭 가봐야 할 수목원 10선’ 선정

강원특별자치도 산림과학연구원(원장 채병문)은 강원특별자치도립화목원이 산림청이 추진하는 ‘2026년 꼭 가봐야 할 수목원 10선’ 공모에 선정됐다고 밝혔다.

 ‘꼭 가봐야 할 수목원 10선’은 산림생물다양성 보전과 수목원의 가치 확산에 기여하는 우수 수목원을 발굴·홍보하기 위해 추진되는 사업이다.

올해 공모는 ‘가족과 함께 가봐야 할 수목원’을 주제로 전국 공·사립·학교 수목원을 대상으로 진행됐으며, 서류 및 현장평가를 거쳐 최종 10개소가 선정됐다.

특히 이번 선정은 강원특별자치도 내 공립수목원 가운데 최초 사례로, 화목원이 그동안 축적해 온 식물 보전·전시·교육 기능의 우수성을 대외적으로 인정받은 성과다.

강원특별자치도립화목원은 연간 약 14만 명이 찾는 강원의 대표 수목원으로, 수목유전자원을 체계적으로 보전·관리하는 도심형 공립 수목원이다. 춘천 도심과 인접해 접근성이 뛰어나며, 완만한 지형과 산책로, 휴게시설이 잘 갖춰져 있어 유모차 이용과 보행이 편리하다.

또한 어린이와 노약자를 동반한 가족 방문객도 부담 없이 이용할 수 있는 환경을 갖추고 있다.

화목원은 봄·가을 ‘LOVE & ART 페스티벌’을 매년 운영하며, 계절꽃 전시와 연계한 버스킹 공연, 플리마켓, 숲체험 프로그램 등 다양한 문화행사를 선보이고 있다.

산림박물관에서는 목공예 체험 프로그램이 상시 운영되며, 오는 4월에는 강원 산림녹화 성과를 조명하는 특별기획전이 개최될 예정이다.

아울러 단종과 사육신·생육신의 이야기를 담은 청령포 소나무 후계목이 조성되어 있어 자연과 역사적 의미를 함께 체험할 수 있다.

#채병문 원장은 “이번 ‘수목원 10선’ 선정을 통해 화목원의 가치와 매력을 널리 알릴 수 있는 계기가 됐다”며 “앞으로도 누구나 찾고 싶은 가족 친화형 수목원으로 지속 발전시켜 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.

The Gangwon Provincial Institute of Forest Science (Director: Chae Byeong-moon) announced that the Gangwon Provincial Arboretum has been selected as one of the “Top 10 Must-Visit Arboretums of 2026” by the Korea Forest Service.

The “Top 10 Must-Visit Arboretums” initiative aims to discover and promote outstanding arboretums that contribute to biodiversity conservation and enhance public awareness of the value of botanical gardens.

This year’s theme focused on “family-friendly arboretums,” and candidates from public, private, and school-operated arboretums nationwide were evaluated through document screening and on-site inspections, resulting in the final selection of ten sites.

Notably, this marks the first time a public arboretum in Gangwon Province has been included in the list, recognizing the arboretum’s excellence in plant conservation, exhibition, and educational functions.

The Gangwon Provincial Arboretum, attracting approximately 140,000 visitors annually, is a representative urban arboretum in the region that systematically preserves and manages plant genetic resources. Located near downtown Chuncheon, it offers excellent accessibility.

 With its gentle terrain, well-maintained walking trails, and convenient facilities, the arboretum ensures easy access for strollers, children, and elderly visitors alike.

The arboretum hosts the annual “LOVE & ART Festival” in spring and autumn, featuring seasonal flower exhibitions, busking performances, flea markets, and forest experience programs.

The on-site Forest Museum offers year-round woodworking experience programs, and a special exhibition highlighting Gangwon’s forest restoration achievements is scheduled for April.

In addition, visitors can explore historical elements such as descendant pine trees from Cheongnyeongpo, associated with King Danjong and loyal scholars, blending nature with historical storytelling.

Director Chae stated, “This recognition provides an opportunity to widely promote the value and charm of the arboretum. We will continue to develop it into a family-friendly destination that everyone can enjoy.”
