“Pulling Tradition into the Future!” Samcheok Jeongwol Daeboreum Festival Opens Feb. 27, 2026

삼척시는 유네스코 인류무형문화유산이자 강원특별자치도 무형유산 제2호인 삼척 기줄다리기를 중심으로 한 2026 삼척정월대보름제를 오는 2월 27일부터 3월 1일까지, 그리고 정월대보름 당일인 3월 3일까지 총 4일간 개최한다.

Samcheok City will host the 2026 Samcheok Jeongwol Daeboreum Festival, centered on Samcheok Gijul Ttugiri (gi-rope pulling)—a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Intangible Heritage No. 2—from February 27 to March 1, with additional events on March 3, the day of Jeongwol Daeboreum, for a total of four days.

올해 축제는 “으라차! 삼척기줄! 전통을 당겨 미래로!”를 주제로, 세대를 아우르는 참여형 프로그램과 삼척만의 고유한 문화유산을 결합해 전통과 현대가 어우러지는 축제의 장을 마련한다.

Under the theme “Pulling Tradition into the Future!”, this year’s festival blends Samcheok’s unique cultural heritage with hands-on, intergenerational programs, creating a vibrant celebration where tradition and modernity meet.

개막식은 2월 27일 오후 5시 엑스포광장에서 열리며, 시민과 관광객이 함께하는 ‘새해 소망 길놀이’를 시작으로 식전공연, MBC 특집방송 축하공연, 에어리얼쇼와 불꽃놀이가 이어져 축제 분위기를 한껏 끌어올린다.

The opening ceremony will take place at 5:00 p.m. on February 27 at Expo Plaza, beginning with the “New Year’s Wish Street Parade” joined by citizens and visitors. Pre-opening performances, an MBC special broadcast concert, an aerial show, and fireworks will follow, heightening the festive atmosphere.

민속놀이와 체험행사도 풍성하다. 달집태우기, 망월놀이, 낙화놀이 같은 전통 세시풍속은 물론 윷놀이·줄씨름·제기차기 대회가 열리고, 한복 체험·전통차 시음·가족소원쓰기 등 참여형 프로그램이 마련돼 남녀노소 누구나 즐길 수 있다.

A wide range of folk games and hands-on activities will also be offered, including traditional seasonal customs such as Moon House Burning (Daljip Taeugi), Mangwol Nori, and Nak-hwa Nori. Competitions like yutnori, rope wrestling, and jegichagi will be held alongside interactive programs such as hanbok try-ons, traditional tea tastings, and family wish-writing—ensuring fun for all ages.

정월대보름 당일에는 산신제·사직제·천신제·해신제 등 전통 제례행사가 진행돼 삼척의 역사와 문화적 정체성을 되새긴다.

On the day of Jeongwol Daeboreum, traditional ancestral rites—including Sansinje, Sajikje, Cheonsinje, and Haesinje—will be performed, offering a meaningful reflection on Samcheok’s history and cultural identity.

시 관계자는 “삼척정월대보름제는 단순한 지역 축제를 넘어 세대가 함께 즐기며 전통을 계승하는 전국적 문화축제로 도약하고 있다”며 “시민과 관광객 모두가 삼척의 매력을 느끼고 공감할 수 있는 축제를 만들어가겠다”고 말했다.

A city official stated, “The Samcheok Jeongwol Daeboreum Festival is evolving beyond a local event into a nationally recognized cultural festival where generations come together to enjoy and pass on tradition,” adding, “We will continue to develop a festival that allows both residents and visitors to fully experience and connect with the unique charm of Samcheok.”
