Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Office of Education
Launches “On-Site AI Education Program for Schools in Former Mining Areas”
“Bridging the digital divide through hands-on AI training and career guidance in collaboration with Microsoft”
The Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Office of Education partnered with Microsoft to operate the
“On-Site AI Education Program (Hour of AI X Empowering Local Futures)” from December 29, 2025, to January 2, 2026,
aimed at reducing the digital divide and supporting future career exploration for students in former mining areas.
The program was delivered through on-site visits to schools in Taebaek, Samcheok, Yeongwol, and Jeongseon,
allowing students in remote areas to experience hands-on AI training and career-oriented lectures directly in their classrooms.
The program consisted of AI hands-on sessions for elementary and middle school students and career guidance lectures for high school students.
For elementary and middle school students, the curriculum focused on △learning basic AI and coding concepts through game-based activities,
△experiencing real-life AI applications, and △participating in collaborative, problem-solving lessons.
For high school students, △AI professionals from leading global tech companies introduced real-world industry practices,
while △university students majoring in AI-related fields shared their academic pathways and campus experiences through mentoring-style lectures, providing practical guidance for career planning.
A middle school student from the Donghae area said,
“AI used to feel difficult and distant, but creating things like a game and solving problems with friends made me realize that I can do it too,”
adding, “I want to learn more about coding in the future.”
A high school student from Jeongseon commented,
“Hearing about college life and major selection from university seniors was very helpful for my future plans,”
and added, “I am now seriously considering applying to an AI-related major.”
The Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Office of Education stated that it will continue to expand customized future-oriented education programs through public–private partnerships, ensuring equitable learning opportunities for students who may otherwise face educational disadvantages due to regional conditions.
