The project, jointly commissioned by Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province and Wonju City, involves a total budget of KRW 45.9 billion, including KRW 31.7 billion in national and provincial funding, with construction carried out by Gangwon Development Corporation.

After breaking ground in April, the project completed foundation work and is currently proceeding with first-floor structural wall construction. As of mid-December, the progress rate stands at approximately 10%. However, with the most time-consuming foundation phase completed, the project is expected to be completed as scheduled by the end of next year.

The institute will occupy a 2,860㎡ site with a total floor area of 2,768㎡, featuring a Class 100 cleanroom for semiconductor manufacturing. Approximately KRW 20 billion worth of nationally supported semiconductor equipment for front-end, back-end, and measurement/analysis processes will be installed.

Although construction is ongoing, semiconductor education has already begun.

Gangwon Province and Wonju City established a temporary education center at Sangji University in Usan-dong, with operations entrusted to Gangwon Technopark. Since July last year, hands-on programs in semiconductor measurement, analysis, design, and XR (extended reality) have been offered.

As Korea’s first publicly led semiconductor education institution, all training programs are provided free of charge. The institute serves a wide range of learners—from high school students to university students, job seekers, and industry professionals. Even after its official opening, tuition fees are expected to remain highly affordable due to its public education mandate.

Beyond education, Gangwon Province and Wonju City are advancing a vision to integrate medical devices, AI, and semiconductors, leveraging healthcare data from the National Health Insurance Service and the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service.

Starting next year, the region aims to attract the national “Medical Semiconductor Demonstration Platform” project, establishing Wonju as a medical semiconductor hub. The institute is expected to evolve into a practical support center for local SMEs, offering capabilities from medical semiconductor prototyping and fabrication to packaging.

This infrastructure is anticipated to accelerate the digital transformation of regional medical device companies and enhance the competitiveness of Korea’s medical semiconductor sector.

Meanwhile, Wonju’s semiconductor testbed projects are also moving forward as planned.

The Automotive Electronics System Semiconductor Reliability Verification Center, funded with KRW 35 billion (including national, provincial, and private investment), broke ground in October at Buron Industrial Complex and is scheduled for completion in 2027.

Additionally, the Semiconductor Consumables Demonstration Center, backed by KRW 42.7 billion, began construction in November at the same complex and is expected to be completed in 2028.

With public education, industrial demonstration, and testing infrastructure advancing in tandem, Wonju is rapidly emerging as the core of Gangwon’s semiconductor ecosystem.
