The Commercial High School Principals’ Conference and the 15th Commercial Skills Competition Evaluation Meeting, held on December 12 at Delpino Resort in Goseong, was far more than a routine review session.
At its core, the meeting raised fundamental questions:
Are commercial skills competitions operating in the right direction?
And is commercial high school education truly aligned with real-world demands?
Around 30 participants—including principals, department heads, and vocational education supervisors—took part in the meeting. Notably, discussions went beyond performance reports to focus on the identity and sustainability of commercial education itself.
One of the most compelling moments was the teachers’ evaluation session.
Teacher Kim Yun-ho of Donghae Commercial High School, who coached the Ministry of Education Award-winning student in the Employment Planning Presentation category, demonstrated how competitions can function as extensions of career education, focusing on student-centered development rather than mere outcomes.
This perspective reflects a growing consensus that commercial skills competitions must evolve into educational tools that assess real-world competencies, not just award ceremonies.
With declining student populations and rapidly changing industries, educational effectiveness has become a matter of survival for commercial high schools.
Discussions naturally extended to the 16th Commercial Skills Competition scheduled for 2026, highlighting key tasks such as operational improvements, event restructuring, and personalized coaching strategies—signaling broader reform in commercial education.
The remarks by Kim Seong-rae, Director of Secondary Education, encapsulated this direction:
“We will strengthen cooperation among commercial high schools to expand practical education that genuinely benefits students.”
It was a clear shift from competition to collaboration.
The success of commercial skills competitions should not be measured by medals,
but by how they shape students’ career paths.
This evaluation meeting marked the first step toward redefining that standard.
