강원특별자치도, ‘2025 유엔-해비타트 어워드 특별상’ 수상 영예

강원특별자치도(도지사 김진태)가 개발도상국 대상 국제연수를 통해 아시아·태평양 지역의 정주 환경 개선에 기여한 공로를 인정받아, ‘2025 유엔-해비타트 어워드 특별상(UN-Habitat Special Citation Award)’을 수상했다.

Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Governor Kim Jin-tae) has been honored with the “2025 UN-Habitat Special Citation Award”, recognizing its significant contribution to improving living environments in developing countries across the Asia-Pacific region through international training programs.

‘유엔 해비타트 어워드(UN-Habitat Award)’는 유엔 산하기구인 유엔-해비타트(UN-Habitat, United Nations Human Settlements Programme)가 매년 지속가능한 도시개발과 정주환경 개선에 탁월한 성과를 거둔 개인, 기관 및 단체에게 수여하는 인간 정주 분야의 가장 권위 있는 상이다.

The UN-Habitat Award is one of the most prestigious global honors in the field of human settlements, presented annually by UN-Habitat (the United Nations Human Settlements Programme) to individuals, institutions, and organizations that have made outstanding achievements in sustainable urban development and improvement of living environments.

이번에 강원특별자치도가 수상한 ‘특별상(UN-Habitat Special Citation Award)’은 유엔-해비타트가 특정 기관이나 프로젝트의 탁월한 업적 또는 진행 중인 사업을 비정기적으로 선정해 수여하는 상이다.

The Special Citation Award received by Gangwon Province is presented irregularly to recognize exceptional accomplishments or ongoing initiatives that align with UN-Habitat’s mission.

강원특별자치도는 2006년 유엔-해비타트와 협약을 체결하고, 세계 지방정부 중 유일한 유엔-해비타트 국제연수기관인 ‘국제도시훈련센터(International Urban Training Center, IUTC)’를 설립했다.

In 2006, Gangwon Province signed an agreement with UN-Habitat and established the International Urban Training Center (IUTC) — the only UN-Habitat international training institution operated by a local government worldwide.

2007년 개소 이후 현재까지 61개국 3,950명의 연수생이 이곳을 거쳐갔으며, 도시개발·기후변화 대응 등 다양한 분야에서 강원특별자치도의 정책과 성공사례를 공유하며 국제협력을 이끌어왔다.

Since its opening in 2007, the IUTC has trained 3,950 participants from 61 countries, sharing Gangwon’s urban development strategies, climate response initiatives, and sustainable policy models with the global community.

이 같은 노력이 개발도상국의 지속가능한 도시개발 역량 강화에 기여하고, 유엔-해비타트의 핵심가치와 방향성에 부합한다는 점이 이번 수상으로 이어졌다.

These sustained efforts have strengthened the capacity of developing nations for sustainable urban growth and aligned closely with UN-Habitat’s core values and vision, leading to this prestigious recognition.

시상식은 10월 6일 ‘세계 해비타트의 날(World Habitat Day)’을 맞아 케냐 나이로비에 위치한 유엔-해비타트 본부에서 개최되었다.

The award ceremony was held on October 6, marking World Habitat Day, at the UN-Habitat Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

김진태 강원특별자치도지사는 영상 메시지를 통해 “강원특별자치도는 2007년부터 국제연수를 통해 도시개발과 정주 환경 개선을 위한 다양한 노하우를 국제사회와 꾸준히 공유해 왔다”며,

Governor Kim Jin-tae delivered a video message, stating,“Since 2007, Gangwon Province has consistently shared its know-how in urban development and human settlement improvement with the international community through training programs.”

이어 “61개국 3,950명의 동창생과 이 영광의 순간을 나누고 싶다”고 전하며, 마지막으로 영어로

“For a better future for all of us, we will keep making further efforts. Thank you.”라고 인사했다.

한편, 강원특별자치도는 이번 수상을 계기로 유엔-해비타트와의 협력을 더욱 강화하고, 교육 프로그램을 다각화하는 등 글로벌 도시발전의 중심지로서 역할을 확대해 나갈 계획이다.

Building on this achievement, Gangwon Province plans to strengthen its partnership with UN-Habitat, diversify its training and education programs, and expand its role as a hub for global urban development.
