On Tuesday the 23rd, Gangneung City signed an agreement with the Gangneung Office of Education (Director Kim Ki-hyun) to “establish a foundation for the IB program and nurture future talent.”
The agreement aims to introduce the International Baccalaureate (IB) program into local schools and set up a cooperative system for its stable operation.
The IB program, based in Switzerland, is an internationally recognized curriculum designed to develop critical thinking, creative problem-solving skills, and a global perspective. It is already being implemented by 12 education offices across Korea and emphasizes student-led inquiry-based learning.
Through this agreement, Gangneung City expects to move beyond rote learning, expand student-centered classes, and improve both global talent development and the quality of public education.
Key points of the agreement include ▲building and promoting a foundation for the IB program ▲administrative support for its operation ▲and developing education models suited to the local context.
Mayor Kim Hong-kyu stated, “With the introduction of the IB program, students in Gangneung now have the foundation to develop creative thinking and global competencies essential for the future. He added, “We will continue working closely with the Office of Education to improve the learning environment and nurture future talent.”
