- [column] Chuncheon Sets Its Heart on the Wave of Books

Chuncheon has been chosen to host the 2026 Korea Reading Festival. Soon, waves of books will ripple across the lakeside city, where wind and water already dance together. Following Gangneung (2016) and Wonju (2022), Chuncheon now has the chance to redraw itself as a true “City of Books.”
“The Wave of Books, Chuncheon Walk (冊).” This theme carries resonance beyond a mere slogan. When the waters of Gongjicheon, the stories of Kim You-jeong Literature Village, and the paths of Seoksa Park meet books, reading will no longer sit only on desks—it will wander through the streets and the hearts of the people.
Chuncheon’s literary heritage shines brightly. The humor of Kim You-jeong and the depth of Jeon Sang-guk live on in the city’s very breath, and upon this memory new blossoms of reading culture are set to grow. Above all, because citizens will lead and participate, this festival promises to be one woven by the community itself.
This event, supported with 300 million won in national funding, must not fade as a passing occasion. Only when encounters, reflections, and sharing through books are nurtured into a lasting structure can Chuncheon be reborn as a genuine “City of Books.”
Books transform cities. Just as one book can open a person’s heart, a wave of books can renew the spirit of a city. May this Reading Festival color Chuncheon into a place where people, stories, and dreams flow together.
