G-Lab Policy Meeting Held to Explore Future Strategies for Sokcho’s Fisheries Industry

- Climate Crisis Response in Fisheries… Proposals on “Blue Food Tech & Yellowtail Festival”

- New Model for Winter Festival… Discussion on Yellowtail Aquaculture & Seafood Processing

- Seeking Cooperation for a Successful Food Culture City Initiative

Gangwon Provincial College (President Choi Jong-gyun) held a “G-Lab Regional Policy Proposal Meeting” on February 25 at Sokcho City Hall to discuss future strategies for Sokcho’s fisheries industry in response to climate change and measures to revitalize the local economy.

The meeting aimed to establish a public-private-academic governance framework involving the university, local government, fishermen, fisheries cooperatives, seafood processors, and small business owners to address regional challenges and develop sustainable fisheries strategies. Around 15 participants attended, including Lee Byung-sun, Mayor of Sokcho, city officials, fisheries representatives, merchants’ associations, and academic researchers.

Discussions focused on responding to rising sea temperatures and changes in fish species caused by climate change along the East Sea coast. Three key policy directions were proposed: diversification of fisheries-tourism festival content, establishment of small-scale 공동 seafood processing facilities accessible to fishermen and small businesses, and introduction of new aquaculture technologies adapted to rising water temperatures.

Mayor Lee emphasized that food festivals such as dumpling, ramen, and gimbap festivals nationwide have played significant roles in boosting local economies. He stressed the need for Sokcho to develop a new winter festival model incorporating aquaculture technologies to respond to declining fish stocks and environmental changes.

Professor Emeritus Kim Byung-gi of Gangwon Provincial College proposed fostering yellowtail, a winter delicacy, as a strategic regional resource. He explained that by adopting a fattening aquaculture model using smaller yellowtail (locally called “mareum”) caught along the East Sea, fish weighing 5–6 kg could potentially be grown to 10 kg. Stable winter supplies of yellowtail and salmon could support a new winter seafood festival, contributing to the revitalization of local commercial districts and Daepo Port.

The RISE Project Team plans to compile a “G-Lab Regional Policy Proposal Report” based on the discussions and work with Sokcho City to gradually implement a fisheries-tourism convergence innovation model.
