At around 7 p.m. on April 8, a Golden Bat (scientific name: Myotis rufoniger), classified as a Grade 1 Endangered Species and Natural Monument No. 452, appeared at the entrance of Cheongok Golden Bat Cave, located in downtown Donghae City.

The appearance of this rare bat in early spring is highly unusual, as the species is typically spotted during the summer months.

Nicknamed the "Bat of Fortune" due to its rarity and symbolism, the Golden Bat is scientifically known as the Red Bat, but its bright orange fur and black wings shimmer like gold under light—hence the name. With an extreme gender imbalance—up to 40 males per female—its reproduction is difficult, making it one of the world’s rarest species. In Korea, it has been protected as a Grade 1 Endangered Wildlife Species since 2012.

The sheer possibility of encountering such a rare creature in the middle of a city is enough to pique public curiosity. Although sightings are rare, their unpredictability only adds to their value. As the saying goes, “If you see one, luck will follow.”

The Golden Bat has become a symbol of cave tourism and a unique representative of rare natural encounters. Its actual appearance in Cheongok Golden Bat Cave has helped the cave earn a reputation as a must-visit destination.

This spring, a visit to Donghae may be the perfect opportunity to experience the rare fortune of seeing a Golden Bat. Such a special moment, encountered in a preserved natural setting, goes beyond simple sightseeing—it becomes a cherished memory.

Since its opening in 1996, Cheongok Golden Bat Cave has served as a stable habitat for Golden Bats, indicating the pristine condition of its internal ecosystem. The presence of this endangered species in an urban environment alone speaks to the cave’s high ecological value.

The cave itself is also a fascinating destination. Formed in limestone, this natural cave offers a rare chance to witness the wonders of nature within the city. Recently, pedestrian handrails within the cave were replaced, enhancing the viewing experience and increasing expectations for a rise in visitor numbers.

Chairman Jang Hae-joo stated, “The fact that Golden Bats inhabit this area proves that Cheongok Golden Bat Cave is an ecologically clean and valuable space,” and added, “We hope many tourists will be lucky enough to witness a Golden Bat up close.”

Cheongok Golden Bat Cave is open year-round, with visiting hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
