A key institution for nurturing professionals in the K-Semiconductor Cluster in Gangwon Province

On April 1st (Tuesday) at 2 PM, Wonju City and Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province held a groundbreaking ceremony in Hakseong-dong, Wonju, to mark the beginning of the Korea Semiconductor Academy, which will serve as a major hub for semiconductor workforce development.

The ceremony featured a congratulatory speech by Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Governor Kim Jin-tae and a welcoming address by Won Kang-soo, the Mayor of Wonju, officially announcing the commencement of the project.

The Korea Semiconductor Academy will be constructed with a total project budget of 44.8 billion KRW (including 20 billion KRW in national funding, 11.7 billion KRW in provincial funding, and 13.1 billion KRW in municipal funding). The facility will span 2,768 square meters across two above-ground floors and is scheduled for completion by December 2026.

The academy will feature semiconductor process, measurement and analysis, design, extended reality (XR), and maintenance equipment to provide hands-on, practical training in semiconductor-related fields.

As the first public-led semiconductor training institution in the nation, the Korea Semiconductor Academy will be easily accessible to all and will cater to a wide range of educational demands, including high school students, university students, and corporate employees. It is expected to serve as a key semiconductor workforce development hub for Gangwon Province by strengthening connections with the region’s upstream and downstream semiconductor industries.

#Governor Kim Jin-tae stated, “The power of nations will be determined by semiconductors. As workforce development is the key factor, I anticipate that the Korea Semiconductor Academy will play a central role in Korea’s semiconductor industry.”

#Mayor Won Kang-soo emphasized, “Training semiconductor professionals is the foundation of industry growth and the key determinant of success or failure. We will spare no effort in providing active support to produce the talent needed for the future industrial ecosystem.”

He further added, “I firmly believe that the talents nurtured at the Korea Semiconductor Academy will become global leaders driving Korea’s semiconductor industry forward. Wonju City will dedicate all available resources to ensure that it becomes a core part of Korea’s semiconductor cluster by fostering a favorable corporate investment environment and attracting globally competitive enterprises.”
