Hwacheon High School Introduces St. John’s College Great Books Program for 2025 Freshmen

The GB program, newly introduced this year, is part of the school's core curriculum implementation following the full adoption of the high school credit system, the 2022 revised curriculum, and the conditional approval of the "Autonomous Public High School 2.0" designation for schools recruiting children of military personnel. The program has been incorporated into the curriculum as a 2-credit school-designated course in Life and Culture Essay Writing.

St. John’s College’s GB program is a widely recognized interdisciplinary classical education approach that enhances literacy and critical thinking by encouraging students to read and discuss classic works across various disciplines—including literature, philosophy, mathematics, social sciences, and natural sciences—without relying on lectures or textbooks.

This program integrates reading, discussion, and writing processes to cultivate creative and integrative thinkers who can engage deeply with great works. In collaboration with St. John’s College, Incheon National University, Hallym University, and Kangwon National University, professors from these institutions, along with the school's Korean language teachers, will conduct the program throughout the year.

Kim Tae-hee, a first-year student, shared,
"I have never had many opportunities to discuss books with my friends at school. Through the GB special lecture, I was able to read various works together and have deep conversations. I hope to continue developing my thinking skills while reading and share more book discussions with my friends in the future."
