Proactive Response and Preventive Measures for Infectious Disease Outbreaks

The Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Institute of Health and Environment (Director Shin In-cheol) announced that it will conduct enterovirus testing in childcare facility environments within the province to proactively respond to potential outbreaks of enterovirus infections in vulnerable facilities.

This investigation will be conducted from March to November in four childcare centers across the province. Environmental surface samples, including toys, door handles, and floors, will be tested for enteroviruses, providing data for hygiene management.

Enterovirus infections typically occur from late spring to early autumn, with outbreaks predominantly among young children during the summer.

These infections can cause illnesses such as hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) and herpangina. In severe cases, they may lead to neurological complications like meningitis and encephalitis.

Enteroviruses are mainly transmitted through contact with an infected person’s feces or respiratory secretions. In childcare facilities, where young children live in close quarters and have underdeveloped hygiene habits and weaker immune systems, the risk of virus transmission through contaminated shared items is particularly high.

Shin In-cheol, Director of the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Institute of Health and Environment, emphasized the importance of hygiene practices such as handwashing and environmental disinfection to prevent enterovirus infections.

He stated, "This investigation is expected to proactively prevent infectious disease outbreaks in vulnerable facilities and contribute to creating a safer childcare environment."

- 감염병 집단 발생 선제적 대응 및 예방 대책 마련 -

강원특별자치도보건환경연구원(원장 신인철)은 감염 취약 시설 내 엔테로바이러스 감염증 집단발생에 선제적으로 대응하기 위해, 도내 영유아 보육시설 환경에 대한 엔테로바이러스 검사를 실시한다고 밝혔다.

이번 조사는 도내 어린이집 4개소를 대상으로 3월부터 11월까지 진행할 예정이며, 장난감, 문고리, 바닥 등 환경표면 검체에 대해 엔테로바이러스 검사를 실시하여 환경 위생 관리 자료를 제공할 예정이다.

엔테로바이러스 감염증은 보통 늦봄부터 초가을까지 발생하며, 주로 여름철에 영유아를 중심으로 유행한다. 수족구병, 포진성 구협염 등의 증상을 유발하고, 심한 경우 뇌수막염, 뇌염 등의 신경증상을 유발하기도 한다.

주로 감염자의 대변 또는 호흡기 분비물과의 접촉을 통해 전파되며,

특히, 개인위생에 취약하고 면역력이 약한 영유아가 집단으로 생활하는 보육시설의 경우, 오염된 공용 물품을 통해 바이러스가 전파될 가능성이 높아 각별한 주의가 필요하다.

신인철 강원특별자치도보건환경연구원장은 “엔테로바이러스 감염증 예방을 위해 손 씻기와 환경 소독 등 위생 관리가 중요하다”며, “이번 조사를 통해 취약 시설 내 감염병 발생을 선제적으로 예방하고, 감염병으로부터 안전한 보육 환경 조성하는 데 기여할 것으로 기대된다”고 밝혔다.
