Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Governor Kim Jin-tae, hereinafter referred to as "the Province") held the "Gangwon-Alberta Future Industry Cooperation Roundtable" on Monday, February 10, at 11:00 AM at Chuncheon Sejong Hotel. This event was organized as a follow-up measure to the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in September last year, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the sisterhood agreement between Gangwon Province and Alberta.

At that time, Governor Kim Jin-tae and the provincial delegation met with Premier Danielle Smith and agreed to advance their cooperation into an economic partnership, committing to sustained collaboration in future industries over the next five years.

The roundtable brought together over 40 participants, including government officials, representatives from industrial and economic support institutions, universities, and energy sector companies from both regions. Participants focused on the hydrogen industry as a key area of future industry cooperation, sharing major projects from each institution and discussing practical collaboration strategies.

Gangwon Province is actively promoting the hydrogen industry as one of its five core future industries. By 2028, the province plans to invest 317.7 billion KRW in the Donghae-Samcheok region to establish an industrial promotion center, a safety testing center, demonstration test facilities, and a hydrogen liquefaction plant, forming the foundation for the hydrogen storage and transportation industry. Notably, Gangwon Province was designated as the nation’s first specialized hydrogen cluster last year, enabling priority support for hydrogen-related companies in terms of tailored growth, R&D, and technological development.

Meanwhile, Alberta is Canada's largest hydrogen producer and a global leader in clean energy and related technologies. Given Alberta's strong expertise in hydrogen, carbon capture, and storage (CCS)—key focus areas for Gangwon Province—further collaboration between the two regional governments is highly anticipated.

Additionally, Gangwon Province will participate in the Alberta-Korea Forum, hosted by the Alberta provincial government on Tuesday, February 11. Under the theme "Sustainable Energy Security for Korea and Canada," the province will introduce its hydrogen industry ecosystem and seek to expand its cooperation network with domestic and international energy stakeholders.

2월 10일(월) 11시 춘천세종호텔, 강원-알버타 미래산업 협력 라운드테이블 개최 - 강원-알버타 자매결연 50주년 업무협약에 따른 후속 조치

강원특별자치도(도지사 김진태, 이하 ‘도’)는 2월 10일(월) 오전 11시 춘천세종호텔에서‘강원-알버타 미래산업 협력 라운드테이블’을 개최했다. 이번 행사는 지난해 9월 강원도와 알버타주의 자매결연 50주년을 기념하여 체결된 업무협약의 후속 조치로 마련되었다.

당시 김진태 지사를 비롯한 도 방문단은 다니엘 스미스(Danielle Smith) 주수상을 만나 양 지역의 협력관계를 경제협력 파트너십으로 발전시키기로 합의하며 향후 5년간 미래산업 분야에 지속적인 협력을 추진해 나가기로 약속하였다.

이번 행사에는 강원과 알버타 양 지역의 정부 관계자, 산업‧경제 지원 기관, 대학, 기업의 에너지 분야 관계자, 전문가 등 40여 명이 참석하였으며, 참가자들은 미래 산업 중 수소 분야에 주목하여 각 기관의 주요 프로젝트를 공유하고 실질적인 협력 방안을 논의했다.

도는 중점 육성 중인 5대 미래산업 중 하나로 수소 산업을 추진하고 있으며, 동해‧삼척 지역에 2028년까지 총 3,177억 원을 투입해 산업진흥센터, 안전성 시험센터, 실증테스트, 수소 액화 플랜트 등 수소‧저장 운송사업 기반을 조성하고 있다. 특히 지난해 전국 최초로 수소특화단지에 지정되면서, 수소 관련 기업의 맞춤형 성장과 R&D, 기술 개발 등이 우선 지원된다.

한편, 알버타주는 캐나다 최대 수소 생산 지역으로 친환경 에너지 및 관련 기술을 선도하고 있으며, 또한, 도가 중점으로 추진하는 수소와 탄소 포집 및 저장 분야에서도 높은 전문성을 보유 하고 있어 양 지방 정부 간의 협력이 더욱 기대되고 있다.

도는 2월 11일(화) 알버타 주정부가 개최하는 알버타-코리아 포럼에도 참석한다. ‘한국과 캐나다의 지속가능한 에너지 안보’라는 주제로 열리는 포럼에서 도는 수소산업 생태계를 소개하고 국내외 에너지 관계자와의 협력 네트워크를 확대할 계획이다.
