The 450-year-old traditional 'Dobaerye' event, continued in Wichon-ri, Gangneung City, Gangwon Province, was held on the 30th at the Wichon Traditional Culture Heritage Center.

In Wichon-ri, the Dobaerye event, which embodies the Confucian ideals of respecting elders and honoring parents with filial piety, has been passed down as a traditional culture every Lunar New Year. This year, the event is being held with the newly appointed village chief, Shim Chang-sik (89), who took office on the 11th.

The event began with a procession of the village chief's palanquin, followed by pre-ceremony performances, scholarship awards, and a joint New Year's bowing ceremony. Traditional games such as Yutnori were also planned. Open to everyone, the event provided a meaningful opportunity for children to experience Korea's precious traditional culture and learn about community spirit. The Wichon-ri Dobaerye has been a local custom since the Joseon Dynasty, taking place on the second day of the Lunar New Year.

Residents, dressed in traditional attire such as dopo and black durumagi, gather with their descendants who have moved away, totaling about 100 people, to perform a joint New Year's bow to the village chief and elders, wishing for a peaceful new year. On the day of Dobaerye, the village women's association prepares tteokguk (rice cake soup) and other foods, which everyone shares while exchanging good wishes, celebrating a community festival.

Eom Myeong-seop, chairman of the Wichon-ri Daedonggye Association, stated, "The Wichon-ri Dobaerye, which has been continued for over 450 years, is more than just a New Year's bowing ceremony; it is a precious cultural heritage that embodies the essence of our traditional culture and community spirit. It is particularly meaningful as we are currently pursuing its designation as an intangible cultural heritage of Gangwon Province."

Mayor Kim Hong-gyu said, "The Wichon-ri Dobaerye is a valuable cultural asset that preserves the gradually disappearing traditional culture and conveys the value of respecting elders and honoring parents to the next generation. I hope many citizens and tourists will participate to experience and enjoy our traditional culture."

강원 강릉시 위촌리에서 이어지고 있는 450년 전통의 '도배례' 행사가 30일 위촌전통문화전승회관에서 열렸다.

위촌리에서는 매년 설 명절을 맞아 웃어른을 공경하고 어버이를 효성으로 받드는 '경로효친' 사상이 담겨있는 도배례 행사가 전통문화로 전해 내려오고 있다.

올해는 지난 11일 취임한 심창식(89) 어르신을 촌장으로 모시고 행사를 진행한다.

이날 행사는 촌장 가마 행차를 시작으로 식전공연과 장학금 전달, 합동세배식 등의 순서로 진행하며 이후 윷놀이 등의 전통놀이 한마당이 펼쳐질 예정이다.

누구나 참여할 수 있는 열린 행사로 진행하는 만큼, 특히 어린이들에게는 우리의 소중한 전통문화를 직접 체험하고 공동체 정신을 배울 수 있는 뜻깊은 시간이 되었다.

위촌리 도배례는 조선시대부터 위촌리에서 전해 내려오는 미풍양속으로 설(음력 1월 1일) 명절 다음 날인 음력 1월 2일에 이뤄진다.

주민들이 도포와 검은색 두루마기 등 전통 의복을 갖추고 타지로 나간 자손들을 포함해 매년 100여 명이 촌장을 비롯한 마을 어른들께 합동세배를 드리며 새해의 안녕을 기원한다.

특히 도배례가 열리는 날에는 마을 부녀회 등에서 마련한 떡국 등의 음식을 함께 먹고 덕담을 나누며 대동 한마당 축제를 지낸다.

(사)위촌리대동계 엄명섭 회장은 "450여 년간 이어져 온 위촌리 도배례는 단순한 세배 행사를 넘어 우리 전통문화의 정수이자 공동체 정신을 잇는 소중한 문화유산"이라며 "현재 강원도 무형유산 지정을 추진하고 있어 더욱 의미가 깊다"고 전했다.

김홍규 시장은 "위촌리 도배례는 점차 사라져가는 전통문화를 보존하고, 다음 세대에게 경로효친의 가치를 전달하는 소중한 문화자산"이라며 "많은 시민들과 관광객들이 참여해 우리의 전통문화를 체험하고 즐기시기를 바란다"고 말했다.
