Gangneung City Cancels Year-End Bell-Ringing Ceremony and New Year Sunrise Events

강릉시, 제야 타종식 및 해맞이 행사 취소

Gangneung City (Mayor Kim Hong-kyu) has decided to cancel the year-end bell-ringing ceremony, originally scheduled to be held on December 31 at the Imyeong Daejonggak Bell Pavilion at City Hall, and the Eulsanyeon New Year sunrise events at major locations on January 1. This decision was made to mourn the victims of the recent airplane accident at Muan International Airport in South Jeolla Province.

However, for those planning to visit major sunrise spots such as Gyeongpo Beach and the Sandglass Park in Jeongdongjin to welcome the New Year, the city will maintain its planned deployment of traffic and safety personnel. Ambulances and medical staff will also be stationed as originally scheduled to ensure visitor safety.

Meanwhile, during the national mourning period (until January 4), the city government and its affiliated institutions will fly flags at half-mast. Public officials will wear mourning ribbons, and year-end and New Year ceremonies will be conducted in a simplified and solemn manner, with accompanying performances canceled.

Mayor Kim Hong-kyu expressed his condolences, stating, "We mourn the victims of this tragic aviation accident and extend our deepest sympathies to the bereaved families, who are enduring indescribable grief. Together with all public officials, we will honor the memory of the victims and express our sincere condolences."

강릉시(시장 김홍규)는 전남 무안국제공항 여객기 사고 희생자를 애도하기 위해 오는 31일 시청 임영대종각에서 개최할 예정이던 제야 타종식과 1월 1일 주요 해맞이 명소에서 열릴 예정이던 을사년 해맞이 행사를 취소하기로 결정했다.

다만, 새해 일출을 맞이하기 위해 경포해변 및 정동진 모래시계공원 등 주요 해맞이 명소를 방문하는 사람들의 안전을 위해 교통관리 및 안전관리 인력을 정상적으로 배치하고 구급차와 의료진 배치도 당초 계획대로 추진한다.

한편, 국가애도기간(내달 4일까지) 본청 및 읍면동, 산하기관은 조기를 게양하고 공무원은 애도 리본을 패용하며 종무식 및 시무식 행사는 부대행사인 공연을 취소하여 간소하고 경건하게 진행할 계획이다.

김홍규 강릉시장은 “이번 항공기 사고 희생자분들께 애도를 표하며 특히, 형언할 수 없는 슬픔에 잠긴 유가족분들께 깊은 위로의 마음을 전한다.”며 “모든 공직자들과 함께 희생자들의 넋을 기리며 애도를 표하겠다.”고 말했다.
